I've been having ongoing transmission problems with my Verada V6 . It completely failed a short while ago and it cost $3000 to repair. Ouch!

Recently problem have been recurring it has been slipping when starting off, much more than it should and I imagine it will not last much longer. I intend to try a repair myself, having been keen on car repair in my past and presently short of cash and havbe lost faith in local mechanics.

I was looking for advice on what I should be looking for as the cause of the problem and what parts I should aim to replace. I understand the gearbox has no bands and is a clutch driven system. Would the slipping be likely to be in the torque converter or is it more likely to be another clutch?

I have noticed that when going down hill if you put the transmission in 3 or 2 or 1 there is no noticable engine braking so you can't use engine braking on steep hills. Is this normal?

Turns out the Verada is in limp mode. Actually it is permanently stuck in thrid gear which is why it didn't act as a brake going down hill.

I borrowed a diagnostic computer and it says that it is the input and output sensors that are the trouble. This is a little frustrating since these were supposedly replaced once before.

The next question is where is the input/output speed sensor located. My Hayes Mitsubishi manual is pretty pathetic document and I guess I should be happy that it even mentions the existence of the speed sensors.

There is some sort of sensor on the wheels but I think that is for ABS. I'm guessing its one of the plugs in hte transmission housing. Anyone have any clues?

That's all valuable information thankyou.

I'm not sure what the link is for the V6. My car is a Verada V6 year 2000.
The Workshop manual for 2nd gen is for a 95 but it gives an idea of where the "speed sensors are which are there referred to a pulse generators and I think I can identify them.

I have an old oscilliscope that I can use see what is coming off the sensors. If there is no pulses then that is the problem and I should reppplace the. A mechanic has offered to install used sensors for a much better price than I've been hit with on my previous mechanical difficulty. He insists it is far too risky to try yourself and misinstallation will blow up the gearbox! Is this likely to be true?

I can probably check the sensors I have an old oscilliscope that I can use to check the signal . I'll check this first and for anyone that is intersted I'll post what finally happens.

nothing wrong with old oscilliscope

I have worked on veradas only so far

that info covers your verada second gen V6 for the 2000 model very little changed

just takes a bit of searching

the pulse generators are the black units bolted onto the gearbox there are only two should be in the automatic section easy to find on the box

the problem in the tcu is usually in the white resistors on the circuit board or dry soldered joints even a memory chip can fry

the TCU are about $ 75 at a wrecker

if you were in brisbane I know where there is a good v6 verada auto box
just sitting out of the car
