I have a 2003 Galant 4 cylinder. All of a sudden yesterday it stalled. It started again fine. It idles fine. When in Park I can increase RPMs fine. However, when I try to turn the wheels or put the car in gear, it immediately stalls. If I let the car sit overnight and start it, then everything is fine for about two minutes. Drives fine. Steers fine. Then after about two minutes it stalls and will stall repeated when put in gear or attempting to turn the wheels.

Any ideas? Car had break job about two weeks ago and oil changed this week.

Ok, the problem is definitely associated with steering. Shifting out of Park was a red herring. If the car is in gear or in Park and the wheel is turned only slightly, then the engine stops and the oil, brake, and battery lights come on immediately. Sometimes (but not always) the SES light will come on 1-2 seconds later.

Help please!!! I am trying to find a MUT-II so that I can get any error code. I can't take it anywhere since I can't drive it and I don't want to tow it anywhere until I know more about the problem.

sounds like your pump may be locking up and loading then engine to a stall. have someone turn the wheel while the hood is up and see if the pulley on the pump is even turning. or remove the belt and see if this goes away. power steering pumps are pretty pricey and I see them fail from contaminated fluid pretty often. if thats not the problem it could be in alot of different places, fuel pressure is the first place i would start after the power steering pump.


p.s the check engine light may also be a red herring as you put it, does the light stay on when the car is restarted and left to run without turning the steering wheel?
