http://abcnews.go.com/US/Story?id=4198416&page=1

The 18-year-old behind the wheel of a BMW that crashed this weekend, killing five Florida teens, was reportedly online hours earlier seeking advice on how to handle the $80,000 car at speeds of 140 mph and above.

You can **** yourself up pretty well in a Civic or a Ford Explorer, let alone an M5. If you think you are so good at handling a car, and you live anywhere that it snows, just go to a big open unplowed lot some night with a few inches of snow. Drive around at about 30, making turns here and there. When you least expect it, let your passenger jack the E-brake in the middle of one of your turns and see how well you recover. Unless it's "PERFECTLY" then just shut up and go take a class.

If you are a parent of a new driver, pass up that boost controller or whatever the next $400 mod is going to be, and get that kid into a performance driving class. If you are a kid with a sports car, spend your own **** money to go get into a class. It's not going to make you drive faster, it's going to make you understand this car that you think you are controlling a little bit better. So you will think a bit sooner, and NOT DO the stupid stuff.

Don't tell me you can't afford the class, because I know you are eyeballing some rims or some other mod for this car, or you could give up your next 20 pizzas or something like that. And if you are a parent, you can probably get this class for about 10% of what the funeral will cost you, and you won't be crying for the next 30 years.

Think about how fast they were going. a mile and a half at Wide Open Throttle in a 500 HP M5. Thats 160 170 if not more.

an 18 year old behind a 500HP car asking for more. this is sad and i hope all read it. it'd be nice to learn to drive before you go 0-60 in 5 seconds.

i think thats the problem. i was a teen until a few month ago and not to be selfcentered but i got my stuff together. i've purchased every one of my vehicles with my own money (over 30,000) and have rented an apartment for 2 years, never had a late payment on anything nor any law trouble (baring traffic tickets in 5 years of driving) so not all teens are dumb. its the teens in a rush to prove that they aren't dumb.

the ones that buy a really nice car and default on in within 6 months, or the ones so apt on proving their abilities that they bite off more than they can chew. IMO

this is why you should not give cars like those to unexperienced drivers.

That's why parent's shouldn't let their kids drive their nice, powerful cars. If you're 18 and make enough to afford an $80,000 car then you probably won't be stupid with it.

I hate how his recklessness is the reason they are dead. I don't feel bad for the kid at all. I feel for the airport and the people that live in the community because now the media and the investigation is screwing up their lives.

Yeah, it was his recklessness but do you really think that the others didn't have some impact on it? More than likely they were probably cheering him on. Peer pressure is a powerful thing.

And I'm not disagreeing with you. At the end of the day, it was his fault but in reality, most likely none of the passengers were saying to stop or they wanted to get out. Hell, they all coulda been drunk/high but we don't know all the facts

I have done 2 seperate performance driving classes. One for FWD and one for RWD. And I have to say, it is the single best investment on a vehicle I have ever made, and one of the cheapest at only $600 combined.

Just about 1 month ago here in stl we had about 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground and I was in my dad's Mach 1. I was driving down the highway and a jeep wrangler spun sideways and flipped over the median right into oncoming traffic, in my lane. Had it not been for the driving school, I would have hit that guy.

And I know what you might be thinking, why was I driving a mach 1 in the snow??? The answer is that my dad makes about 3 times as much as me, so therefore, in times of bad weather, he takes the eclipse so that he can actually get to work.

Those driving classes are amazing. Absolutely worth every dollar. And loads of fun even if you only get to take your own car.

Thanks. I know that there is a Cone Clinic here by some local driving/racing group. It basically has you drive a cone course all day for time. If you're new you get a teacher in the car with you. They do it at a base where the hovercrafts coma ashore so it's just a big cement area. It's not the season that they have it now though.

i'm interested. but another idea.

i took a defencive driving course when i was 17. a cop taught it and said this, take you car into an icy open lot. and do the worst you can to get out of control and then recover. you'll miss it for the first 4 or so tries then you'll get the hang of it. (i took it cuz i spun sideways in my buick and hit 12 fence posts and a telephone pole stopped me)

after this i have been saved a few times. really icy roades with a deer in it and had i not taken my car to the lot i'd have flipped or slid off into a huge ditch, nothing is better than practice and practice and practice.
