Hi, My 1998 28 turbo has been in and out of the garage for over a month, Black smoking , white smoking and cutting out.

So far they have changed the fuel fillter, pipes all the way from the tank to the fillter, checked the tank and sent the pump away to have a few new seals. Its also recently had new glow plugs.

I finaly had it back last week with a £850 bill, but I had to take it back 2 days later as it is black smoking worse than ever, when I put my foot down.

Anyone got any ideas, as I am starting to losse faith in them.

Had a similar problem with a pump change. The timing mark on the crank pulley cannot be relied on, as it slips on the rubber damper. A diesel specialist who we deal with regularly told us a way to check. The pulley has two round holes in. Find two pins to fit snugly and by placing a straightedge across, at top dead the edge should be absolutely vertical (make sure vehicle is level, use a spirit level to check both vehicle and straightedge).
The only other way is to fit a new pulley. If your garage has used your original crank pulley mark to time pump it will be out, thereby causing your problem.
Hope this helps - batfink
