My 1993 Eclipse GS 1.8L, stick, is stalling constantly. I'll be driving 40mph and stalls. Sitting at light and stalls. Seems like when I start to give it gas it stalls out. Kinda like no fuel is being injected. I've have a new distributor, new spark plugs, new battery, new fuel filter, new fuel relay... Now when it stalls it won't even start after. Seems like the RPMs kinda flux a lil between 0 and 500 and then konks out. Trying to give it gas while its doing this doesn't help. After messing with the fuel relay wires I heard the relay kicking on and off. So thought something was loose or short. Tighten that and ajusted the idle up a bit, and well that fix the starting problem, but still stalls constantly. I'm mean every few miles. Starts back up fine but then stalls a lil later again.. Can someone please help.. I'm pulling my hair out??

Don't take my word for it but, it sounds like you might need a new fuel pump. Right now I just have problems starting my car, never stalled while driving though. I think that's from the pump stopping.

How long has this been doing it? Do you have any enemys cause when I was a bit younger we used to stick sandwich bags in peoples gas tanks and when they would drive the sandwich bag would get sucked up to the pump and restrict the gas and the car would die but after they let it sit for a while the bag would float away and the car would start again.....just a suggestion

LOL.. NO enemies that I'm aware of.. I've only had the car a week. I talked to a mech. and he said 99% sure not the fuel pump. Said that the pump on that car doesn't go in and out.. It just shuts down.. I'm going to have the battery terminals replaced now.. If that doesn't work I'm going to pull my A/C relay (since they are interchangeable) and put it in the fuel relay casing and see if that works.. Wish me luck.. I'll let you know if it works.. But if anyone else has an Idea please let me know. I'm up for suggestions.. Oh.. I've looked into the lemon law to. Doesn't apply to used cars or else I would have returned the car.. Electrical problems are such a pain in the @$$....

Do you have a smooth idle? and does it stall only when you give it gas? you mentioned it seems like gas isn't making it to the engine. Try the fuel filter. I had a similar prob on an old suburban but not to the extent of stalling. If you give it gas and it shutters and stalls then you could have a clogged fuel filter.

Its a smooth stall. I'll be driving and stall or the car will start and as soon as I give it gas stall. I'm trying to contact the person I bought it from to see if he changed the fuel filter cause it looks new. Waiting for his reply. I don't think thats it though cause usually a car is sluggish.. Won't pick up speed w/ a fuel filter. This car car runs fine while it's on. The RPMs don't really flux to much so I don't think it's the O2 sensor or the Idle control valve. It's at the shop now getting new terminals cause I'm to lazy to do it. If doesn't help it after that, like I said I'm going to switch the relays.. If that doesn't work I'm thinking a wiring short or maybe the fuel injectors.. What do you guys think??

Oh and this may be a dumb question but was is TPS? I'm not the best mech. (enough to get by) but sometimes I need my hand held. Thanx for the help so far..

I'm telling you, it sounds like the fuel pump is quitting on you. Either that or something is just telling it to stop deleviring fuel.

Trust me the fuel pump isn't ruled out b/c a mech. told me it's probably not the problem, but I'm trying to fix the small common sense things first b4 I go riping a fuel pump off a car and putting it in mine. Or do you recomend a new one over a used in that situation???

Alright folks.. Heres the update on my stalling issue.. I contacted the previous owner and he already replaced the battery, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, the distributor, and the Computer. I just got new terminals put on. As for the fuel relay he said that's one thing he never replaced. So a 15 year old relay is still in that car. According to the mech. as the relay gets old and heats up it become temper mental.. It will start and stop working as it pleases. Which explains the engine stalling due to no fuel being injected, because the relay stopped and wasn't allowing the pump to pump the fuel. As I said b4 when I stall the other night, it fiddled with the relay and as I wiggled the wire connection to the battery the relay would kick on and off. So, I just picked up the relay and fuses to the relay at copher's. I'm going to be putting them on when I can tonight.. Superbowl comes 1st. I'll let you know in a couple of days if that solved the problem so we all can help the next poor sap like me with this issue b4 spending all that money on everything else.. Thanx again for all the help and advise.. If you're not a member and are reading this....... JOIN... This site will help you save more time and money that you wouldn't beleive.

Oh, and if I end up having to replace the fuel pump, i'm going with the OEM.. Not turbo. I had a 92 turbo.. Fun car but way to much of a pain. I like having my slow lil 1.8. Besides keeps me out of trouble.. To many tickets already..
