I would like to get my back windows tinted. I never had to do this before since most all of my other vehicles came with the backs tinted right from the factory.
I would be taking it to a reputable place close to the house. They have been in business for a really long time. But what should I look for?
I know in Illinois getting the drivers & passenger front windows tinted is a no no....but I still might get a really light tint done to the fronts & maybe a regular factory like tint done to the rest.
Anyone else have their cars done in the southern(ish) Chicagoland area & what should I end up paying for this?
So far I got a quick quote for all the back windows for $179....didn't get a quote on the drivers & pass...yet

i think 179 is through the roof. i got all my windows done (except for the front obviously) and i payed 150. but that was in montana. where stuff like that costs more usually. i don't see why that would be so expencive. i'd get quotes else where before you commit.

TINT protection. if your going to pay to have it done at a reputable place i would invest in protection. i got mine done in memphis tn for 150 for all my windows... i got STREAKS really rough edges on the inside "weather stripping" if you could call it that. feel it with your finger and order a tint protection

Weel here is something new for you all to think about...maybe
I just got off the phone with a window tin t place & they are telling me that the newer vehicles like ours do not have felt lined window guides....meaning the part where the window slides up & down on. They are plastic like...... He was telling me that by using the felt lined gaskets around the windows, that I wouldn't have to worry about the window tint getting scratched up & that the tint would hold up for years & years without scratching as he claims it would with the regular hard plastic lined that came with our cars.
Hope your sitting down for the price.....all windows with the felt lined gaskets $325 :puzzled:
That's alot more than I thought I would have to spend.
Now I called up another place & asked them about the felt lined gaskets & he said I wouldn't need it & well, you get a warranty with that so if something goes wrong or gets scratched...just bring it back. Don't know what to do.....
The 1st place told me that they have a guy there who has a Lancer & that they tried doing the tint without the felt lined gasket to see what would happen & that it did scratch within the 1st week. I'm looking to do this right the 1st time & not have to worry about it down the road...but $325 is alot for all of that......
What do you guys think & for those WITH window tints....are you haveing any issues with anything?
Jeez if this is the cost of what it will cost....I guess I might just leave them stock.

If you're willing for the drive, there's a spot just south of Montrose on Western ave.
Pilsen Auto Glass (773) 463-3535 4308 N Western Ave, Chicago IL
Just walk in there and tell them you want all 5 windows tinted (3 back and 2 front). Offer $100 cash right now and they'll do it for $125.
Do note that the price stated above doesn't include the moleskin upgrade, but as far as tinting goes it's still cheaper than the offers you are getting.
just order it there like i did. 30$ works like a charm easy to put on. then go get the tint. the scratching is NO JOKE. it looked horrible before i had it redone

i did it in reverse lol. I got the tints and am waiting for a warm day to install felt. I havent rolled the windows down cuz its so cold, hopefully rolling them down a few times for the install wont scratch the tint.

Hey all,
I've had a look through most of the discussions on tinting and can't seem to find a definitive answer. I recently had my windows tinted - had moleskin put on both the top and bottom rubbers but i still got scratches. The guy doing the tint then cut-off the bottom rubber and this worked fine for a while - but now it is starting to scratch again - the guy at the tint shop says that i should cut off the top rubber as well. has anyone else had to go to this extreme? or is there another solution.

Hello all, I've been a lurker here for the past week or two. I've got to thank you all for the awesome info provided on these boards!
So obviously the moleskin is the way to go when getting your windows tinted, so I went to tintprotector.com and placed my order. Called some local SoCal shops and it just so happens that the best price ($205 yes i know expensive...) was the most professional shop in the area with great reviews.
As I am speaking to Signature tint I mention I ordered the moleskin liner. They said after doing hundreds of tint jobs on new lancers not one has come back with complaints of scratches without it. They even sell it there and said he would not install moleskin on my Lancer because he would be ripping me off. He also mentioned that there are definitely certain models of cars out there that need it, but the lancer is not one of them. I guess that they may do things a bit different (maybe trim the weatherstripping or something).
Anyways I cancelled the order through tintprotector and went for it. Hopefully I wont be back here crying in a week or two because of scratched tint. Wish me luck!

Got my tinting done when I first bought the car, the dealerhsip threw it in for free, but after the first month my tinting was scratched and pretty much garbage... Luckily my tinting place comes with a lifetime warranty and got it done again free of charge.... Even decided to go darker this time... I definitly recomend the moleskin liner for the windows or your tint is just going to keep gettin messed up

Hi Friends, I've a lancer ES 09, and I got the tints done some 2 months back without using any moleskin. Till now its doing fine (touch wood :-) ) and I do a lot of rolling up and down of driver side window. I noticed inside the door panel there is no hard plastic but 2 layers of moulding, I guess scratching of the tints also depends on the tint quality. There are scratch proof tints available.

Well here's an update.
1.5 months with no moleskin and guess what... no scratched tint.
I guess it really depends on the shop and the type of tint they use. I even let my car get really dirty and rolled the windows up and down regularly and no scratches.
