Hello Chris. I have just joined the forum and saw your post. I have a '93 Triton Ute here in Australia and have recently had a problem with the pulley on my 3L V6 engine also. I am a mechanical fitter so luckily was able to repair it without too much problem. There were many causes for the wobble which was very noticable. These were: The holding bolt had stripped its thread and had worked out a bit The pulley key on the shaft had bent over The centre of the pulley had flogged out allowing it to flop around.
The main problem is that the pulley is only on the shaft by a small distance considering the size and weight of it. That means that it must be held in tight with no allowable movement. I was able to have the pulley machined out and rebushed and keyed at a machine shop, which was far cheaper than the A$400 I was quoted for a new one. I purchased a new woodruff key and pulley retaining bolt and and made sure that the internal thread was clean and not damaged. You can get a thread tap if you want to be sure it is clean. When I assembled the pulley, I put some loctite retaining compound on the thread to ensure it would not come loose again, and tightened it to the recomended torque setting. I have done substantial miles since then without a problem.
The only major headache I could see you having is if the crankshaft itself has been badly damaged, but I was able to emery tape clean the small defects that the worn pulley had caused. I wish you all the luck and hope this has been of some use to you. regards - Ash
