that may be the heater core with a hole (common fault )

dissconntect the heater hoses in the engine bay and block them off from the heater very well

flush the heater core out with water see if the smell goes away

once that glycol leaks into the carpet it stays a long time

dash has to come out to reach the heater core

heater section in the middle part

got the same issue with my 2002 vrx do I gotta take the whold dam dash out to get to the core? I know some cars you can take out a pannel on the bottom and get to it. I haven 't even tried yet but I was just wondering. if I gotta take the whole dash out im bringing it in thats way too complicated for me.

On my car i had a similar issue altho i have a 1997 VR-S The issue i had was im guessing a similar smell , but it was the a/c evaporator drain port, it had a bit of dirt and debris that had built up in it and the water was not draining fast and causing it to slowlly build up , i had the smell but thought it may pass, til one day i noticed the floor on the passenger side was very damp. I ended up cleaning the vent tube and tons of water came gushing out , i made a makeshift cover to cover it from excess dirt that may be slung at it frum the rear driveshaft

well I don't think its the same exact thing tho I get the nast oil film on the inside of the windshield and my a/c works fine its just when I turn on the heat. so Im pretty sure its the heater core, but I have also heard it might be just the o-ring in the heater core I was wondering if anybody had alot of knowledge when it came to this subject? and also is there symtom differences between the o-ring problem and an actual heater core problem?

ok so I went and talked to a few of the mits dealership guys and they say they see diamantes between like 99 and 05 come in ALL the time with a faulty heater core o-ring. Mits has made one that works better and they say after they fix it they hardly ever see that diamante agian. its a tough car. last around 350k from what I hear from most people but here's the thing. If you don't fix that heater core leak it leaks onto the passanger side into the carpet and under the carpet is the TCU and the TCU relay. the antifreeze with leak on to those and short one out. if it does your Tranny will go into fail safe mode. so if your tranny starts shifting really heavy and skipping first gear all together or something crazy like that. its cuz one of those shorted out. I got luck and it was only the relay that shorted out ($30 part) the TCU is considerable more but not to worry your tranny is most likely ok. so my advice call up a radiator guy and have em get you a new o-ring in there. its a spendy operation but if it isn't done it causes all sorts of problems.

Yeah, its an old thing many people see. When tehre are TCM issues and the TCM is not controling the shift solenoids once in D the valve body in the tranny just adverts pressure directlly to teh 3rd gear set of clutches in teh tranny. Wut i have read tho in my bulletines is that like my model 96-98 models had better heater cores and also a pressure restrictore in the valve leaving the engine port which is why these models never had that issue , cause the pressure was lower , altho it was thought that heating levels or time was not sufficient so they changed to a higher flow system and core, but the heater core was prone to leak after time because of the inlet pressure. Go Figure
