QUOTE(c0dy @ Mar 4 2008, 07:35 PM) I cannot see how using different oil gives 8 HP. Can someone explain how that works? I have always used Valvoline Syntech. There is relatively little factual information regarding royal purple as far as VOA's and UOA's are concerned. For one, Royal purple tends to have higher levels of lead in it as a friction reducer. Bad for cats, doesnt always meet the latest oil requirements, however I am not sure which they are up to at the moment. Also, royal purple will have a lower viscosity. Now the viscosity and weight of the oil are independent of each other. For example, motor oil can be rated as Xw30, assuming under the 30w conditions, the viscosity is between 9.3 and 12.5 cst (centistokes). In the lubrication world, this is a big difference. Royal purple's synthetic viscosity at 100*c (a typical standard of operating temperature, along with 40*c) is thinner than several other oils, which is what allows less drag. Comparing 10w30, Mobil1, Amsoil 7500, Castrol syntec, Pennzoil Platinum, Pennzoil CONVENTIONAL, Valvoline MAX Life, and Conventional Castrol GTX are all equal or less viscous than Royal Purple. A lot of it is marketing, Amsoil 7500 is regarded as an excellent oil. There are racing oils which outperform these oils however can damage cats and typically are not recommended for street driving due to a lack of additives. Jim

QUOTE(EclipseJc @ Mar 4 2008, 01:30 PM) Fram tough guard is what i purchased for the oil filter... Didn't know of any good others Fram is junk! Check out picture number 5.... http://mymiata.paladinmicro.com/MiataOFilters.htmFram tough-guard filters have a great filtration rating, up there with Mobil1, however they have one major flaw which explains why my car, after 117k miles @ 3k intervals has not seen ONE fram oil filter.... Paper end caps on the filtration media. Most filters either use steel or a silicon type material that "caps" the pleated filter. Fram uses cardboard, that, over time, can become soft and saturated and has been known to deteriorate and appear in the drained oil after an oil change. K&N is very similar to Mobil1, Both being made by champion laboratories. Purolator Pure1 is another outstanding filter, with excellent filtration ratings.

QUOTE(EclipseJc @ Mar 5 2008, 11:24 PM) ehh god damnit lol. Should I change it again? I mean... its brand new so I shouldnt have to worry about anything right??? my motor almost has 130k on it No, I would not worry about it. Just change it either at 3 months or 3k, whichever comes first. In the case of the filter, the time does matter because the oil is saturating it. Its a shame, because 3k intervals are short for synthetic. As far as synthetics, Royal Purple is a decent oil it is just very expensive. Mobil1, Pennzoil Platinum and Amsoil 7500 are all very good synthetic oils. Castrol is another good one. Pretty much all name brand oils are good, and surprisingly, Walmart Supertech is very similar to Motorcraft oil and has shown to perform well in UOA's. Personally, I do not use synthetic oil in my car and I have 117k on a 2001. I use quaker state mostly because I can usually get it for less than 2$/qt. I am a firm believe in frequency of oil changes on conventional oil compared to long OCI's on synthetic. Many people even go 5k on conventional oil and UOA's have shown the oil has performed well after this interval, but I stick to three because I take many short (10 minute) drives. Jim
