This is a very interesting topic and as much info you can provide us it's very helpful I was wondering on which brands of oil and oil filters.  I will check if on the local retailers we have those brands

There are plenty of good filters out there. The Mobil1 and K&N and filters like that are synthetic media filters.

I still use traditional paper media filters. Lately I have been using Valvoline brand filters (made by champion along with K&N, Mobil1) because that is what we buy in bulk at work so I get them for kinda cheap. Wix is another great filter, although you can expect to pay around 10$ a pop for them. They are sometimes available cheaper under the napa gold label. Regular purolator filters are decent filters and are not to expensive either.

Pennzoil and Quaker state are both fram filters. Great oils, crappy filters. AC Delco filters are supposed to be great filters although I do not have any local retailers so I do not use them myself. Hastings makes another good filter.

Walmart has a great oil selection, but absolute garbage as far as oil filters go.

If you go to www.royalpurple.com you can get plenty of info on there products. I have used RP in my 95 Eclipse and it runs great and it has over 200k miles on it. As for oil filters I use either WIX or Mobil 1. Both are very good filters.

After looking into RP a bit more, it has shown to produce marginal numbers on UOA's, so Im leaning more towards overpriced. There are equal if not better synthetics for less money.

Oh, and apparantly on Hotrod TV where they achieved the HP increase they switched weights as well, so the results are far from accurate. I would wager that Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil1 or Castrol Syntec would produce similar numbers to PP.

Mobil1 here. I'd use RP as well, but usually I'll buy a lot of Mobil1 when it goes on sale. RP...... never on sale. lol

As for filters, it's either K&N or Mobil1. Stay away from FRAM. It's funny because I was having a debate with the other Service Manager about Fram filters. We even went into the shop and started asking the techs. All of the Master Techs were highly against FRAM (as soon as the word Fram came out of our mouths the response was "Junk.") The holes are too small to start with. If you compare a Purolater and a Fram (same filter size) side-by-side you can visibly see a difference. I'm sorry, but I'm not a fan of limiting the oil flow in my engine. Secondly Frams have been known to come apart. Sure, you might use frams all the time and never have this problem, BUT.... do you feel like taking that chance? The only guys that said Fram were the guys who just change tires. In the end, the other manager said he was going to change filter brands to Mobil1 or Purolater from now on.
DON'T USE FRAM!

I've always used Frams oil filters...It keeps my oil pressure high and hasnt blown like you said...I've been using Fram oil filters since i had my civic...and that was way back when. Then again talking about oil and filters is like talking about religion and politics.

I... Hate..... Fram....

When i first got my 93 tsi, the oil filter kept blowing off. I mean, literally, blowing off. Causing me to lose all oil pressure and rendering me stranded. Granted im still running fram (practically super glued on with locktite), i would just recommend from personal experiences anything else.

No it isnt, we posted a couple links that show that the fram is an inferior filter. Filters fairly well, it is just cheaply made. If you haven't had a problem with one on your car, all the power to you. I just don't think its a risk worth taking.

This may be old but I found this in one of the posts from the forum about comparisons of oils. It shouldn't matter much because the car is so old now but here you go.

Hey Just an update on Royal purple... I have a 98 eclipse GS with 103,000 miles. On regular oil I was getting 26-30 mpg (usually closer to 29). I drive all highway to work with very few stops. I changed to RP and put a WIX filter on. My thought was that if it does produce more Horsepower that it could be making the engine run more efficient. So I spent nearly $50 on oil and filter (about double what I usually spend). My first tank of gas gave me 36.5 MPG!!!! I didn't change driving habits either. So I will check the next few tanks to make sure it wasn't a fluke, but if this car consistantly gets that kind of milage the savings in gas money more than pays for the added cost of the more expensive oil. In fact I ran some numbers and if gas is $3.15/gallon (i just paid $3.16 cash per gallon) over 3000 miles I would save about $65 in gas. Every little bit helps.... If I keep getting favorable results, I am sold on royal purple / WIX. As for the lead deposits being bad for the cat... I'm running a high flow cat (emmissions are very relaxed where I live... no sniffer test) so no worries there!

Just thought I would share my results... :57:

second tank... had some mixed city driving. Usually would've gotten 26 mpg in this kind of driving, and experienced 32 mpg with r.p.

I'm sold!

Come to think of it, there was a fram oil filter on my eclipse when i bought it was a fram. That basturd blew off half-way through a 300 mile trip. Not fun. More oil, and 180 towtruck bill, plus a new filter.. running again. That Sucked. Never used a fram again, mobile 1 or k&n. Never had another one blow off either.
