I contacted Mitsubishi Corporate yesterday to make an "official" request to add an option of DRL's being on or off. They said they had not had that many requests for such an option, but would take it to engineering. Based on demand and level of dificulty, the end result will be coming out to dealers. Therefore, the more people that request the option for selecting DRL's be on or off by the consumer (such as a choice in the ECU) the faster the solution will get out to us. End result is you will be able to do HID mods without capacitor and resistor time constant mods, or simply be able to drive without people flashing you, because they think you have your lights on when you don't need them.

Here is the number to Mitsubishi that I called, 1-888-648-7820.

You will need the last 8 digits of your VIN.

They are going to ask if you have asked your dealer about having this turned off, hopefully, you can say 'yes'. Then they will want to know the dealer's name.

Again, the more lancer owners that ask for this option, the faster it will be delivered.

I really want HIDs, but the DRL gets in the way. And I don't want some mechanic messing up/shanking/splicing the wiring system.
I'm also waiting for after market healights to come out before I go with HIDs.

Off topic: Just buy new bulbs. Philips DiamondVision look great and you can get a pair for a decent price. Since they are halogens, you don't need to disable your DRLs. The low beam bulb size is 9006. You can find the rest of the bulb sizes in your manual. Just don't buy PIAA bulbs... they're too expensive and you are just paying for the name.

On topic: Sounds like a good idea, but we're still going to have to pay just to disable the DRL feature anyways and since the info will only be released to the dealers, we will most likely have to pay a hefty price to get them done. Not to mention, they will most likely throw you a "you will void your warranty" speech if you install the HIDs yourself. Secondly, the only people that would really need to disable them are people fitting HIDs in their system. DRLs are a safety feature and safety isn't something you should be overriding.

manybrews has been MIA for quite some time now... if he's not around to complain about safety features, somebody has got to do it!

I agree that safety, no matter what, is a good idea. But the customer should have the ability to choose whether they would like to drive with the lights on or off during the daytime for visibility. The same way we all have the choice to put on a seat belt or not. It is obviously safer to wear it (and I do), but I have the choice to put it on or not.

If this is added into the menu items of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), or similar, it would be as easy to select whether you want it on or off as using a male or female voice for the navigation prompts. This option would simply be included in the next firmware revision, you would receive it the next time you are in the dealership even for an oil change. The shop should be connecting the computer to your car to look for error codes logged since last maintenance anyway.

I think it is pretty funny, if you have seen the Lancer commercials on TV...

The Lancer driving around on the commercial does not have Daytime Running Lights! Even Mitsubishi decided it must not look very appealing. They either already have the ability to turn them off in the engineering version of the software, or they simply rendered them not on in the commercial. Whichever, they must have interpreted they are not desired by the general public. Because if they were such a "good idea" you would think they would have had them illuminated during the commercial.

There is no difference during day time whether the DRL is on or off.
During day time, there is so much light that the DRL simply becomes useless.
Plus, whenever it gets dark or hard to see, you have to turn on your headlights anyway.
IMO, DRL is a useless safety feature.
And the fact that the Lancer uses the low-beam for DRL pisses me off.
I don't understand why Mitsu did not utilize the high-beam for this feature.

DRLs are dangerous...think about us out here in the country...with dear...safest way to pass a dear...is to cut all lights out (thats of course only if you have good night vision....which I do)
