what does everyone on here use to read error codes? i can't find anything for my carisma 1999. i have also bought a new throttle body fitted it but i still lose throttle response, it sits alright at 1000rpm then suddenly changes engine noise, something like a induction kit attached and the revs then go up to 3000rpm and engine management light comes on! i have tried altering the sensor etc but nothing makes it any better, am i right in thinking it could be the MAF sensor? or the EGR valve? as it smells rich when i first start it

OBD II scan tool to pull and read codes.
Check all vacuum lines for possible leaks. If they all look good, then chances are it the IAC.

that's what i was told on another forum, and something about them been for 2001+
could you tell me where the IAC is found? is this the common problem of what symptoms i'm having?

stephen

No cars in the UK use OBD-I or OBD-II. [Despite what the e-bay shysters say...]

That car will probably use a manufacturer-specific protocol as there are no EOBD codes listed for it; just 17 general ones.

Code-readers are pretty pointless anyway; I can't remember the last time a code told me the actual fault. Unless you understand the intricacies of the self-diagnosis system and can backtrack it's reasoning; they'll just lead you astray.

Hmm, i'll have to look into it further. I'm interested as to what the procedure is to pull codes without taking it to a dealer. If an OBD scan tool is not an option i'd be curious as to what is. Send me a PM if you find out before me.

OBD is a protocol used exclusively in the United States.  OBD-I was for pre-'96 US cars and uses a very odd L-shaped plug; mainly for flash codes.  OBD-II was for post-96 US vehicles and is a set of very basic and slow protocols.  Your car isn't; wasn't and never will be, fitted with either.

The much faster EOBD is used on 2001-on UK petrol cars; but your car pre-dates that era and used one of hundreds of different manufacturer protocols.  Until someone makes a specific DIY tool for your car, it's serious Asian scanners only.

This is a very tedious subject and has been covered in depth many, many, times before; so use the search button above to have a read.

i was told carmen-lite and i have seen other tools applicable mainly over £1000. but i have found one that works with a 1999 http://www.motorscan.net/catalog/product_i...&products_id=90

i emailed these and was told it would work!

hi all, a diagnostic tool for a 1999 mitsubishi uses JOBD software.
in regards to my car i started it today and strangely it idles fine, no more jumping up and down on the revs???? the only problem now is the accelerator, it doesn't seem to hold it's revs if i put my foot lightly down the revs won't go up and if they do eventually it goes to 2000rpm and from there i can hold it? any thoughts on this?
as anyone else used a universal lambda sensor on there car, i was told you can't use them on a carisma, any views?

About the noise. Loose or damaged rod bearings sound like a deep sharp thumping noise all the time as the motor is running. Loose piston pins or a cracked piston sounds like a slapping noise all the time. A closed stuck hydraulic lifter sounds awful also similar to a rod bearing only not as deep sounding. More like a hammer striking a plate of steel. Somehow other auto body parts make the noise but I don't think that's your problem.

no i think it's something to do with my acceleration, because i can't hold the revs, i put my foot on the accelerator it won't register until 2000rpm but i can't hold the revs! something to do with the position sensor i feel,
anyone know if i can use a universal lambda?
