2.6 motors have this problem

if you dont have water in the oil
or oil in the radiator you are lucky

water may be entering the cylinders

check for spark and change spark plugs
check compression

a blown head gasket at least
have the head refaced and valve stem seals fitted

if rings get overheated they can loose compression
or the cylinder bores can be damaged

and also look for any cracks
along the front of the block between the welsh plugs

Definately no water in oil or oil in water. definately down on compression though, can hear that without checking. car turns over and nearly fires but can hear a marked difference in compression. think you may be right with the cylindar/rings idea.
