Anyone know of a source for tweeters that can fit the doors of a regular 2008 ES? I know the wires are there and I would rather not have to 1) go to the dealer, and 2) drill holes. Any simple solutions? Crutchfield seems to come closest, but I doubt they can just be a 'plug and play' solution.

I have the GTS & even the stock tweeters on the front doors don't quite seem to give the the highs that I am looking for.

I talked to a couple of guys @ Crutchfield & they told me to get the JL Audio 6 1/2's full range speakers with tweeter in the middle of the woofers cone for my ride (forgot the actual model #, but they know what will & what won't fit depth wise). They told me that I would have to modify the stock tweeter housing in order to get anything else to fit in there. I don't want to do that. So that is why they told me to go with the JL's.
The GTS's front 6 1/2 speakers don't have any tweeters in them. The back 6 1/2's do for the rear occupants. I was told that by replacing the front & the rears with what they suggested, that I would have better overall sound quality & much better highs than what I have now.
They were somthing like $129 for each set...not a bad price I think.

Maybe not quite the answer you were lQQking for....but maybe an alternative?

O.K.....found my Crutchfield mag....the JL Speakers are TR600-CXi 6 1/2"
The price is $139.99

91 Sensitivity (db)

59-22k Frequency Response (Hz)

2-50 RMS power range (watts)

1/2 " tweeters

2 5/16" Mounting Depth

1 Year Warranty

I told the guy that the optional system has 650 watts & he said that these speakers will sound better than the factory ones & can handle the power & will be fine.

Interesting idea. I think that improving the existing door speakers might be a better way to go. Thanks for the help.

If you gonna buy those, you might as well buy the JL TR650-CSI 6 1/2 Component.
I had those speakers in my Camry, and the bass it produced was amazing. The sound was just unbelievable. All the sounds were there, the highs, the mids, and the lows.

No way in hell will full range speakers ever sound as good as separate mids and highs. Please dont get full range. If you dont wanna change stock mid range, just get yourself some tweeters and mount them in stock place. There is nothing plug and play as the plastic piece is mitsubishi specific, all you need to do is either splice the wires and connect to new tweeters or just shove the wires from tweeters into the existing plug and secure it with electrical tape (the ghetto way, but works for someone who doesnt know how, or just doesnt want to splice wires). Its a SIMPLE installation, but sound will be a million times better than stupid full range. all you have to worry about is securing the tweeter itself behind the plastic cover. doenst take rocket science. oh, and ANY tweeter will work.

Hey!

usually, when you buy an aftermarket set of speakers + separate tweeters, you get an extra crossover filter which sends the high sound to the tweeter and mid and low to the speaker. isn't there such a filter factory installed in the car? if so, if u buy a speaker with the tweeter attached (coaxial), will the tweeter work? won't the high sounds be routed to the stock tweeters?

p.s. sorry about my dodgy english

I agree, component speakers would sound way better, but if you didn't want to change out your stock tweets, then this "could" be an alternative. Maybe not the best idea, but something.....

You are correct. Stock stereo has a built in crossover in it. Even though it passes through some highs (for models without the optional tweeters) it routes most highs separate.. So that adds to my point that COAX will sound like $hit with factory stereo. It wont have enough highs, and they sure as heck cant handle a lot of bass.

I changed out all my 4 speakers and added coaxials in the back and a set of components in the front. The difference in mids and highs to before the change is like night and day! The Polks I put in come through very clear. The con if you're running them off the factory deck like me is that you will lose some loudness and the bass is weaker than before cause the headunit can't put out enough power without an amp.

I had a thread on this last year:

thanks!
were there any difficulties in mountig the aftermarket speaker? were adaptors necessary? would some insulaton foil be necessary? I ask this because the lancer equiped with the sub has some resin covers on the doors for better sound.

I assume the resin covers will definitely improve the acousitic imaging of the speakers and yes you will need adapters to mount them. I'm not sure but I believe the CircuitCity guy used some GM adapters.

He did a great job with my install, absolutely not a single rattle coming from anywhere! I will take it back there for my sub and amp install later this summer.
