Help! Thank goodness I found this forum...just registered and spent the last hour pouring thru threads on how to fix my problem...I couldn't find anything like this so I've started a tread...sorry if this has been posted before...

so without further ado...

It started earlier tonight right after I refueled my car (It was raining). When I turned the car back on I switched on the headlights (duh!) and was about to go on my way when I noticed they didn't turn on...so I pulled up somewhere where I wouldn't get in anyones way. I turned them on and off, turned the engine on and off, and tried shaking the car...at first they would turn on for like 1 second after I turned them on then they would just flicker and turn off by itself.

After about 15 mins of cursing the lights came on...and stayed on! I drove a little further and pulled over in a carpark in a nearby shopping complex. Tried looking for what could be wrong but couldnt figure it out...

When I flick between high beam and low beam it works but when I turn them off they just stay on...even after the key has been taken out! ...so now I unhooked the battery otherwise I'm sure it'll be flat tomorrow...

WHAT DO I DO?! btw, Im a car noob...

there is a head light relay

that may be faulty

the headlight relay might be one of the ones in the engine bay fuse box
replace that first

look in the 2nd gen manual for its location

Do I have to replace it straight away? Is there no possibility that its just a loose connection? All the other lights work fine...and it can switch between high/low beam okay...just when I turn the car off I can still switch between high/low beam!

switching from high to low with the ign on or off
is how the car has been wired

its may be a faulty stalk control
the relay
or check the connections to the bulbs at the headlights

if the headlights stay on when you dont want them too
you can remove the fuse for the headlights
and have the problem fixed

ok...I've progressed the problem now...well that depends on how you look at it...

this morning I woke up and connected the battery - headlights still ON.
...so I disconnected it again took pulled out the socket behind the passenger side headlamp (the one connected to both headlamps) I had a look, reconnected it and the headlights didn't come on AT ALL!

I pulled it off again and cleaned the connectors with a air blower and there was a red piece of rubber from i dont know where (very small, <1mm) and took it out...I reconnected it and cleaned the other socket thing on top of that.

Now, the headlights dont turn on at all, both high beam AND low beam...but now the lowest most light works...the one where u flickr the switch once which turns on the HUD and the really low light in the front so other cars can see you in dim light...

but the headlights dont work at all. When I flickr the high beam the blue light on the HUD dun work either...

I checked the fusebox in the engine bay and everything looks fine. The only one looking a half melted to one side (but still connected) is the defogger one I think...

Anyways, I've thrown in the towel...rang up an auto electrician and booked in my car at 1.30pm later. I'll find out the problem from them and will post it up here...

...**** there goes my $$$!

good idea

some second geb veradas and magnas do have a head light problem

in your case
I think the relay stuck on and caused a meltdown

better to have the auto electician fix it than have a fire

zomg, i have the exact same problem, well not quite, just i went to go out last night turned the head lights on and.... well nothing happened, no highbeams, no main lights, only those little pathetic whats it called ones.
anyway, i replaced the main bulbs, and the passanger side one started working after that, but only sort of, dim and still no beams.
I cheacked the fusible link/relay thing(in the bonnet fuse box) and as far as i can tell without a multimeter it's fine, so my guess is it's the stalk. but that doesn't make sense cause everything else on the stalk it working(indicactors etc)

btw my car is 94/95 magna TS V6 executive.

and if this can be fixed without me having to pay some greedy mechanic/auto elec(specially not my local one, last time he did more damage than he repaired) i would really like to know.
I've looked through my Repair Manual and can't find anything much helpful

any help would be very.... well helpfull :P
