I finally got my plates the other day. The dealership asked if I wanted them 2 install them. I said no...I'll do it.

I have the rear plate on & the front one is off. I don't want to get a ticket for not having it on & I don't like where the plate is supposed to go.

I am aware that EVOSOUL has them on E-Bay to go under the headlights like on the EVO's...but I don't want to do that either.

Here is what I came up with. The lower grill towards the passenger side is where I want to put it on. Problem is that the plate is taller than the opening of the grill.
I have access to my brothers Sheet Metal shop where I can cut the Illinois plate down in height by 1 1/2" so it will fit inside the grill & attach it with either bolts or black zip ties. It wouldn't cut down the air flow much if any...still plenty of open grill left. I just hate drilling into the cars body even though it's made for it...

Is it legal to cut the plate down in size...even if it is only a little bit? It would still show Illinois & all of my #'s...but I never did this before nor have I ever heard of someone else doing this.

Suggestions? Cool idea or stupid?

I live in the north side of Chicago and I have seen all kinds of crazy things people have done to get around the whole "you need front plates" controversy. I've seen people do all kinds of things to them. Bend, cut, relocate, you name it. One guy in particular... he cut his license plate so much that all that was left was his license plate number. You couldn't even see the word "Illinois" on his plate.

Personally, I still think it's illegal to modify the plate in any way, shape, or form. If you get pulled over and the cop notices it (which shouldn't be too hard since it's going to be located in an awkward place), it's highly likely that the cop will ticket you for it.

If you want a 100% error proof answer, you could always email Master Sargeant Randy Ness. He's an administrative officer for the Illinois State Police and I'm certain he will give you the answer to your question.

Cool thanks man....I appreciate it.

I measured it again.....I would cut maybe 1/4" off the top & where it says Land Of Lincoln on the bottom....that would be gone. I really wouldn't have to cut off much after all....re-measured it. 3/4" off the plate overall.....so I can fudge it a little here & there....I don't think that it will even whisper "look at me" to a cop. BUT I guess I will be the first to let you know if it does LOL! Or should that be cry out loud...especially if I get a ticket

Well I did it & I think that it turned out great. All of the lettering is still there & there shouldn't be any issues with the police whatsoever.

Now if I only knew how to post pics....yeah...that would help!

I could e-mal the pic to someone if they can post it for me. Send me a PM if you will.

I am 99% sure you cant cut it, the reason why is because of the plates reflective properties. Just showing the numbers isnt enough.

If you get a ticket they might even be anal enough to force you to get a new plate within 30 days... I have seen that one before. but then again they will write you up on just about anything they dont like to see.

Be careful and read up with your local state laws

dosnt look bad, but i would still check with your local authorities on legality issues.

i know if i pulled you over, i wouldnt cite you, only because i can view all the plate #'s, but all agencies are different as to what they will and will not cite for.

VERY clean job. I thought you were going to take a lot more off the plate, but that definitely wouldn't attract suspecion. Good thing that you left the mounting holes on the top and bottom because it looks like you just tried to cram the plate in and it fits.

Shame your car is a Rally Red GTS... red cars are cop magnets and the GTS looks real fast too.

Thank you! I don't know what I was thinking at first....but I didn't need to take as much off as I thought. I could have cleaned it up a little better, but then I would have had to cut more & I just didn't want to do that. I would have prefered to have the plate all the way towards the passenger side, but then I couldn't use the ties to hold it on.....

You know what GTS on our car stands for....

G oes T o S low My wife told me that one the 1st time I took her out for a ride....women. I should have gotten her the 4 cyl. Altima instead of the V6 LOL!
Red may attract....but I still drive slow enough to drive Miss Daisy.....won't catch me doing anything wrong. I don't want to work all day just to pay for a ticket.
Plus as many people can fly around me as they want.....I out for mileage not speed. I have other toys for that :57:

front license plates are mandated by state or individiual majistrates/municipals

it may be a state or municipal code, but it is up to the enforcing agency to determine whether or not they will enforce the code.

same goes for tinted windows, depends on the municipal code, some cities will site even if they see you with tinted windows, or add it to whatever inr=fraction you made have been stopped for. but mind you, if it is a state code, you can rest assure your state or local highway patrols will most definately cite for it.

Indiana doesn't require them either....lucky. I just think that front plates takes away from the front end of most vehicles.

I'm just trying to be different.....try something new.

Here is another idea for you.
