Hello everyone! I hope someone can help.
I have a 1992 pajero TD LWB with 4H drive shudders and vibrates at about 20kph. There was a stange sound and vibration coming from the front possibly in the transfer case. The shudder sounded like chain touching something in cyclic.
I have used the 4H wd before without problem even at 60kph from 2H to 4H and back when towing a trailer.
The vibration occured when I have engaged the 4H at about 30 kph. I tried to lift all wheels, there was no vibration at lowrpm but at a higher RPM, the vibration and shudder occur.
The 2H has no problem at all even at 120 kph run.

Many thanks for the comment

Well... what you've said isolates the vibration to your transfer case and/or your front drivetrain. Not sure what it might be though.

You say there's a strange sound from up front... the xcase sits between you and your front passenger so I would look at your front driveshaft (may need to be balanced), front differential, front axles and also your front hubs.

Offroader,
Thanks for your input. I will try to isolate the source of vibration one by one.
A question, is the drive chain easily get damaged if used in tarmac road.
Regards.

Well, it is a 92. How many miles/km are on it?

IIRC the xcase chain will rattle like crazy but I don't think the truck would shudder.

HTH

Sorry for late reply,

the paj has done 138000KM already. Though the strange sound under load when in 4wd is with vibration. However when all tires are lifted, it sounds like meshing chain grinding on something.

Further to the vibration in the 4H wd, I just happen to test it 3 days ago since I'm out of the country for more than 3 weeks.
Made some hose checks, hose swaps yellow/blue to the solenoids and resistance reading. Made someone check the front axle actuator diapram.

Did the road test at 4H up to 80 kph, no more shudder or vibration. Even engage the 4H at 60 and disengage at some speed no more vibration noticed.

Perhaps the earlier vibration is caused by auto hub not disengaging or by front axle clutch which I'm not sure.

Bottom line is that I can use again the 4H without any problem. Next check will be the regreasing of the auto hubs.
