hey guys! so i recently purchased a 2003 lancer OZ. Im looking for short ram intakes. but im more interested in making my own. not trying to be cheap. i just think its ridiculous to pay so much for a name brand. sorry if i sound like a jerk. im honestly not. lol.
but seriously im wondering if anyone has or knows how to make there own. using the stock piping is ok. im wondering can you connect a filter straight to the mass airflow once you take out the stock air box? i cant tell by looking. so if anyone knows how to please let me know. thanks everyone for your help. i would surely go out and buy some piping and other accessories to make one. but i dont want to mess with the MAS. i dont have access to machines to drill holes. so im stuck with stock piping. let me know if u can help.

p.s. its an automatic. im sure that probably matters. it always does. lol

Inexpensive Short Ram Intake:

Option 1:

You can use the stock air intake pipe.

Things you will need:

-K&N Cone Air Filter (can be bought at any auto parts store)

Option 2:
You can also buy a cheap intake off ebay, but don't use the air filter (buy a K&N cone filter, which you can pick up at most auto parts stores).

what i was gunna do is buy like a K&N filter from a parts store and then some silicone pipe...

remove the factory air box... leave the stock cold air intake...and just attach the pod to the end of the MAF sensor thats what i got told to do and its easy to do your self... willl take like ten minutes...

from someone that has bought the cheap one from ebay (95 Eclipse) they really dont improve anything if you look at the pics the adapter for the MAF is no wider then the stock one so really all your doing is buying something shinny, and the fitment is HORRIBLE. With this said i would suggest go with your original plan and make one or just bite the bullet and buy a name brand. I noticed a huge difference after i took the cheap ebay one off and put an INJEN one on my old eclipse.

Do the short ram intakes come with MAF Sensor Adapters? If I were to buy one, would it come with everything I need or do I have to buy those separately?

short ram intakes don't offer alot of proformance. go cold air I ran over mine when the bushing broke. ebay is cheep for a reason, and used a AEM intake for some other car i found in my friends garage, it works better and attached to the tranny with a simple sheet metal braket. I'll send pics soon. and its not as long and 2 less bends

Short Ram Intakes come with everything needed to install it on the car.



On the Lancer there is only a 1-2 hp difference between the hp gains of Short Ram and Cold Air Intakes. (SRI - 4-5 hp gain, CAI - 6-7 hp gain).

Also, you cannot install a CAI on a Lancer with an automatic tranny (which is what the guy who started topic has).

I got a cheap intake off ebay and I am using the air filter. How would I benefit from buying a K&N cone filter? Better flow?

better filtration, lifetime guaranteed, you just have to wash them every 10,000-15,000 miles. no more buying new filters ever again just a 3 dollar filter cleaner spray thats lasts up to 5 cleans and a filter oil thats lasts up to 10 applications. it ends up costing you less after 2 filter cleans that you would have had to buy new filters with those paper cone filters they give you with the e-bay intakes, and it will not collapse under turbo applications like the e-bay filters do. do you need any other reasons? if so then you don't mind that people are scamming you out of your money is all.
