[B]I have a 93 Verada KR which goes from 1st gear to third gear missing 2nd all together. I have been to a auto mechanic and he reckons a band has broken and the transmissions needs to be pulled and reconditioned.

Could it be electrical or a computer problems, I think this guy just wants the money.

Any ideas???

the auto only has one band a kickdown band
the rest are friction discs for all the gears
try another automatic repair place

reset the puter by disconnecting the battery the reconnect

the problem may be the TCU transmission controller unit
approx $75 from a wrecker

also a diagostic can be done

and page 2 of this link

is the oil burnt or red

if you were in brissy or gold coast I can help you

Thank you for the info.

I took it to another atuo mechanic, he drove it for about 30 sec and told me it was the same problem, a break band (this is after I told him what the first guy said) neither plugged into a computer to check the electrical/electronis side of things.

The overdrive (4th gear) has become dodgy since I've lost second. It comes on and off as it pleases and if in 4th and going up a hill it disengages and revs up untill it goes back to third, any ideas?

Out of interest what does the kick down band do?

I disconnected the battery but still having the same problem. I will have to try and get my hands on a TCU.

The oil is yellow and doesn't really smell, the first guy told me that it was like "honey oil", means nothing to me and the second guy didn't even check.

Thank you for your offer of checking out however I am in Sydney and your help is appreciated.

download this manual . It has your automatic information in full detail
so you know what you are looking at .
second gen is also verada
downloadable manual http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3

have your auto serviced and supply only mitsubishi oil suited to your gearbox
the wrong oil may be in your box causing this problem (oil should be RED)

You need someone to diagnose the electrical funtions of the box
any good auto shop should be able to do this

on the outside of the box are two electrical devices... A and B pulse generators
related to the brake band ...if faulty the sensors may need to be replaced

diagnostic fault 31&32

4th gear slip
the overdrive may need the overdrive friction discs replaced
box doesnt have to come out (easy fix.....called an end clutch kit)

the kick down band locks on to a drum so the gears can change
the kick down band can be adjusted for smooth changes

the two auto places from your description are keen "" to rebuild your box""
when it may not be required

I put a multi meter onto the diagnostic connector and got continuous beeps every second or so, I don;t think it is electrical.

The speedo sticks on zero untill about 20-30 kms would this effect the gear change problem?

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

speedo is a cable ..not a box problem

I interpret the diagnostics for
continuous beeps as normal ( code 10 in fail safe )

after diagnostic reset computer

service box change filter + an end clutch kit

I know of a magna V6 auto that is ok
I pulled it out of a working magna this month oil is red (no torque converter)
it is at the gold coast $300 ono and can be freighted to sydney

or
get a fixed written quote and warranty
may be a worn friction plates in box if auto shop says then box out
may cost approx $ 3000

Thank you I will take your offer of a gearbox into consideration.

I was test driving it again last night and it doesn't actually skip 2nd it just doesn't go into second very easily. If I put it into second and drive it starts in first and goes into second just not very well and quite slowly, there is no clunk or anything just takes a while to go in, would a service fix this?

thanks

I will have a service done, hopefully that will stop 2nd and fourth gear from slipping in and out when the revs go too high.

If you know how much does a good box service cost and what should they replace?
