cam shafts are just as they sound, they are the shafts that are made up of lobes or cams. if you have a DOHC engine it means you have two of these shafts. it runs your intake and exhaust in your engines head, lifting your intake and exhaust valves up at variable times. buying light weight or "performance" cam shafts help with engine to wheel HP distribution. buying them puts less weight against your engines power and also changes your variable timing to a more concise times therefor transforming more HP in your engine and also more hp from your motor to your wheels. does that explain enough? if not then you can follow this link to the "how stuff works" site on cam shafts.

have fun my man.

i forgot to post about cam gears or "timing gears" cam gears are a way to add HP and Torque without changing cams they are almost always required when changing to a forced induction system and getting tru-time adjustable cam gears are likely to be the best type to get AEM makes some very very good ones. $170 for them is a decent price for a 2.4L SOHC eclipse or galant motor. thats the motor i have.

Remember to use reassembly lube/grease when installing cams otherwise you'll be doing it again, plus a little more.
