2002 Mitsubishi Montero has decided to vibrate around 35-45mph. It's not a steady vibration, intermittant at best. Wouldn't bother me but it shakes the entire cab!! It's like you're driving over grooves in the road. Anyone hear of this problem and if you know...the solution? Thanks.......It seems after further trouble shooting that the tranny is going into 5th gear (overdrive) too early. Around 35 mph. This is way too slow for 5th. The vibration goes away at 45mph and the truck is smooth and steady from there. My question now is....does anyone know how to adjust the shift point for 5th gear???? I put the tranny in manual shift and it rides out smooooth! So it has to be the shift point right?? Thanks

Hi,

I know this sounds very obvious, but have you considered wheel balance? This usually manifests itself around 40mph - right in the center of your experience?

I haven't had it on my Mitsi yet, but on my LR3 (Landrougher.. lol)

This was a constant companion, eliminated only after what was termed 'road force balancing' where LATERAL as well as longitudinal balancing was undertaken. Straightforward balancing machines failed to solve it, this did!

Hope this helps... Other causes could be worn cvj joints etc. at the front - is it a high miles vehicle or?????

Doug.

sounds like torque converter shudder.
youll need to get a COMPLETE transmission fluid flush if thats the case.

2nd this advise. Fluid flush and replace is critical with the triptronic tranny What sort of miles do you have on it? Make sure you the correct fluid because if you don't you will be replacing tranny in a short space of time.

Another common problem is intermittant electricl connections in the engine bay. Try removing each and cleaning with some emery cloth and spray clean with electrical contact cleaner. This helped mine shift at the correct points which stopped the shudder with loading the torque converter. Seems some of the sensors get mixed up and report false info to the ECU causing it to shift prematurely.
