I got my Mitsubishi Galant 2002 2.4 about 6 mos ago from a friend of mine. He told me he changed the spark plugs last may, but the wiring wasn't changed and it is evident. I have been getting check engline light that comes on and off for cylinder 2 misfire being detected and the car jerks during stops(with rmp btwn 4-6) also jerks when in drive and just when beginning to accelerate. I'd like to change the wiring, as well as check for the spark plugs and maybe change them and hope that will solve the problem of misfires.
My question is the 2nd cylinder wiring to the spark plug is just a coil. TO change that, it costs about 100 bucks, but i havent seen the wire set that actually goes into the coil itself. Are those wires to be changed at all ? If so how can i change them ?
Cylinder 1 and 3 have regular wires that i found at autozone, but nothing that looks like the wiring for cylinders 2 (where misfire is being detected) and 4, where only coil is present with a 2 by 2" box on top of it.
What should i do to solve this problem ? And will chanign the wiring help the jerking and the engine light to stop coming on? Can anybody walk me through the process of changing the wiring ?
I appreciate your help,
any input is valuable as i'm new to this and this is my first vehicle.

I went to strauss, they would charge 45 bucks for this wire change. Any advice?

There should be another set of wires you can buy at autozone that attach to the bottoms of the coils. Check autozone.com and get the part number of the "slave system" to the part number for the wires to cylinder 1 and 3 that you already bought. The guys that work there should be able to find them by the part number you bring in.. this set of 2 should only be about 11 or 12 bucks. You need both sets of 2 for a full set. You should be able to detach the boot from the coil by twisting... I haven't tried it, but thats what it says in my haynes manual. I just replaced my spark plugs a month ago, but I didn't have to mess with the wires. This is different from my brother's eclipse where they sold him all 4 wires in the same box.

I agree with Nick, however that may not fix your misfire problem. Those coils go bad from time to time and that's what happened with mine. I went to the junkyard and got one for 75 bucks and it took care of the issue. That was 4 years ago.
