Here's the problem

I bought another talon AWD but this time from a dealer. That might not sound like a problem to you but when I was looking at it, it has a mixture of parts that i need to figure out how to identify.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=237832336

the car itself is very clean and hasn't been hacked up by mods, but it does have mods.

Basically what I could tell was it has a 1g intake manifold, head and judging from the idle has at least 272 cams. The head was definately professionaly prepared for that car because the CAS port was blocked and sealed correctly. The block and head are very clean but have oil smear in the normal places 4g63's do. so im thinking the block might have been replaced or rebuilt when the head was put on,,, or the dealer might just be that good at cleaning things but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It has an EvoIII (I think might be knock off but couldn't tell for sure) with J-pipe, injen intake, aftermarket injectors, 3" downpipe and fabbed cat back exhaust. Boost gauge, turbo timer, and oil pressure gauge all installed cleanly so someone took some time and did some work not just slap it together.

What I need to know is how do I figure out what parts are there? how big the fuel injectors are? I have a feeling I might have to tear off the oil pan and valve cover to inspect the engine for aftermarket parts but i'd rather not. Is there a website that identifies part numbers?

Example: SBR stamps SBR and a SKU number to each block they build. The block in this car has aftermarket numbers (non SBR) so do all companies do this and how can I find out where it's from?

since it's from a dealer I don't have the option to find out who the previous owners were unless there is a way to do it?

I haven't picked the car up yet, just paid for it, so I can't just run outside and look under the hood but please don't let that hold back your ideas :liebe011:

the transmission also looks like it might have been replaced,,too clean in hard to clean areas. Just in case you are wondering, I know it's an automatic :P

so I finally get to bring the car home this friday. too much **** waiting

i've been able to identify a few parts from the pics I took but still having trouble.

the turbo is definately a knock off. As far as I know mitsu never engraves their part numbers they are always stamped. But I don't know a ton about evo's did the evo VIII come with a turbo that said evo VIII? doubt it but I don't know and didn't the evo VIII turbo have a dual turbine inlet?

the 1g intake manifold isn't a 1g intake manifold it is definately a 2g manifold on a 1g head. didn't even know that would work, but I have a 1g manifold to put on it. should have taken better pics here to know for sure if it is even a 1g head but i'm 90% sure it is.

anyone know of any way to identify part numbers? i'm kinda stuck

I will have to try that out. I might seem like a weirdo calling someone up saying, "hey did you used to own a talon? what parts did you put on there?" But **** it, if it works that's all I care about :P

does rob work for the DMV?

FINALLY got the car home.

the numbers on the block are too small making it impossible to see without taking things apart. kinda disappointing

i've been thinking about buying one of these video stick

has anyone ever used one? If it works I can inspect the bottom end without taking the oil pan off. I don't think it will go far enough through the chambers in the valve cover to check the top end though. I will probably still have to tear the cover off.

update:

I am sure it has a metal head gasket (thank god) but I don't know which one. it's really thin and seems to be too thin to be the mitsu metal gasket. I don't know for sure what brand it is because i've never used anything else. Are the cometic ones thinner?

I wish I had a better flashlight to see in there. Can't find my **** police style mag-lite <_<

I wouldn't be suprised. sneaky ****

so.. more digging. The j-pipe goes into a nice lower charge pipe to the smic but someone cut and used the old charge pipe as a coupler so that looks like hell and is getting change when I do the fmic.

does anyone know how to recognize fuel injectors? Anyone have pics of different brands of injectors I can compare to?

BTW They aren't fuel injector clinic injectors (why would they be that would be to easy to recognize since they engrave theres with FIC and the flow rate...anything on a dsm can't be that easy, it wouldn't be natural)

more news, I figured I would keep this going so the people who ask "What should I look for when buying a car" can get some good info

got in touch with the previous owner. he is a very pleasant 54 year old man. He basically used it as a weekend warrior (good news) but the bad news is they kid who had it before him had a full 3" exhaust. the older guy didn't like the "fart cannon" that was on it so he had it stepped down at the cat to the stock size and put a stock muffler back on. so it goes 2.5" to 3" on the downpipe to a 3" high flow cat to negative 2,503,483" pipe.

He also was told that the turbo was going bad by a shop he took it to cause he was hearing a noise. so, he took the stock t25 off and replace it with a junk ebay Evo III (now we know who did the install job). Two days later the trans crapped on his porch. so the turbo didn't need replaced after all and he put a junkyard trans in it from a 97 (he thinks). seems ok though.

he also told me that the kid he bought it from had receipts in the glove box. I yelled into the phone DO YOU STILL HAVE THEM????!!. he said no but he did notice something about a head and valves. so no idea still on that one except that I was right it was either new or rebuilt.

so, the car has been running like crap and knocking itself apart at 15psi. I started looking in all the right places after logging a few 40% throttle runs with the dsmlink. the graphs look AWEFUL!!!! anyway, first thing I did was spin the boost controller all the way closed and check the MAF to be intact, which it is.

I suspected fuel to be the culprit and I had a 255 walbro sitting around so I put that in. Then checked all the IC pipes for boost leak because you can actually hear one (good indicator). the BOV recirc tube was very loose and leaking air into the intake so I tightened that. The upper IC hose was about to fall off so I tightened that. Then adjusted idle with BISS (it was about to fall out, I don't even know how it idled at all before)

There is still a boost leak somewhere and some knock with it. Probably at the j-pipe couplers, so I'm ignoring it for the moment until my FMIC piping arrives.

The biggest reason I wrote this novel was because I pulled the injectors yesterday and almost cried. I wanted to toss some 650cc's in there to replace the stockers but someone beat me to it and they are all junk except 1. whoever installed them lost (or left out) the spacers so they got overtorqued and are junk. impedance is way out of whack and one of them actually has a tiny crack on the tip. So, this would definately be ANOTHER cause of the poor performance. -----650cc injectors overtorqued with a stock fuel pump and FPR. someone wasn't using their head

ok im done for now, sorry this is so long :blush-anim-cl:

:( they were on their way to a good home but never had the chance to live. RIP injectors, you never had a chance in the hands of someone who installed you wrong. wish I would have known them sooner :amen:

keep an eye on those ones I sent you the link for on ebay. they will probably go for under $40. if not we will find you ones that do. I still have my stock 420a injectors which are high impedance like yours but they are only 200cc

I just put on a cometic head gasket on mine. It's about the same thickness as the metal mitsu ones, but it's 3 layer. Thick (aluminum-colored) core, and one thin steel black layer on each side. It also has tiny brass rivits to hold it together that stick out all around. 6 of them i think.

You can see the rivots sticking out around the edge. Easiest one to see would be one around the middle kinda behind the exhaust manifold.

And in case anyone didn't read my thread on torque specs:

PM me if you have a valve cover to sell/trade/give to me.

thanks EMC, however, the size i need are anywhere between 330cc-450cc (the higher the better :P).

EDIT: Also, I need help making a decision. after i get my car repainted, whatorder should I do the following mods?

1)Get a mid-rise spoiler w/ led and get it painted to match car (~$300)

2) take out the back seats and bolt some sort of light-weight board down and have it upholstered so that the hatch is alot bigger since the back seats in a 1g are pretty much uselss lol (no idea on cost)

3) have the rest of the interior rephoslter (any idea how much this would cost?)

4) finish the turbo build (about $800 to go!)

I was leaning towards doing the turbo last, however I think now the order i am gonna do it is: 4, 1, 2, 3

Thread hi-jacker! lol

What i would do is instead of doing like a regular post, put up a poll. It will give you the rankings on how many people voted for what.

Personally, i think you gotta make it go fast, before it looks fast.
