Hi All,

I just bought a 2002 model montero and have just tried to change the oil but have been un able to release the sump plug. I have tried all the tools I have and none seem to fit, the closest i got was a 17mm socket.

Has anyone had this problem before or can you recomend the best way of getting it out?

From memory I belive its a 14mm hex head. If you cannot break free try using a 6 pointed socket with a short breaker bar. It also helps if you warm up engine first to loosen up the threads and allow oil to drain better. Be careful not to strip out when re-installing as I might guess that's why its on so tight. Might be best to run into the mechanics garage to do this for the 1st time in case you have another problem. If you strip it out it will be difficult to get into the shop without oil in the sump.

Another hint is to pull off the skid plate, etc for access to the oil filter. This will give you addional room to attack the sump plug.

Jim

PS; Are you sure your on the engine oil sump plug and not the tranny?

Thanks for the tips Benckj, I have ended up taking it to the garage this time.
Just hate paying a mechanic so much to do somthing which is usually so easy.
