When the chance of a low mileage (47K) 2001 Shogun 3.5 Gdi SWB came along I did the research, full dealer service history with receipts for the minor work carried out over the years. Paid the cash for the motor and initially very pleased. Refueled after 150 miles and then lost power and wouldn't rev above 3000 rpm. The Nottingham Main Stealer has quoted £4000+ for new fuel pump, tank and injectors, saying it's fuel contamination. 100% certain that only petrol went in and no reported problems at the Filling Station so I can assume it must be rust that washed off the sides of the tank when I brimmed it. What do you think?

Suggestions for a cheaper option would be welcome ( I've found Zulf and Wicksy thread from Dec2007)

Sounds very suspecious to me as if it were contamination from the tank it would be trapped by the filter prior to going to the injectors & rail. I would look for someone who is not into just parts swapping. Very unlikly that the tank will need replacing and probably just the filter and not the pump.

There is a bit of labour involved with dropping the tank and cleaning everything out. Get confirmed by another garage by checking/changing the pump filter first and then take from there. There is also a sediment trap in the tank prior to going into the pump so that may need cleaning as well.

I plan to get it out of the Stealers asap and trailer it to another garage with a good reputation. The guy there suspects poor fuel quality and intends to drain it and see if fresh fuel and a new filter does the trick, if that works it will be better option than the £4K+. I will keep you posted, thanks for your post.

Hi Trev,
I see you have already read my post so let me update you - apologies if I repeat anything.
My problem was identical to yours but I had overdosed the fueltank with Redex injector cleaner and this may have something to do with it but I cannot be certain.
The dealer was initially stumped because there were no error codes but eventually replaced the tank pump after running a fuel pressure check.
He also found that there was no earth circuit through the ECU and wired a seperate earth to the pump.
I suspect that this earthing problem was the culpit all along but of course cannot prove it and the dealer certainly was not going to comment after changing the pump. They retail at about £900 by the way. A new ECU probaly twice that!
As your problem is so similar as to be identical I would strongly advise having the pump earth cuircit checked and if necessary slave in a seperate earth and see if it works.
My car has run faultlessly since this fix but I have to say I no longer use injector cleaner!

Your new garage's aproach is sound. I checked the tank and filter myself initially before surrendering it to the dealer but everything was OK - the filter is a little gauze bag that fits to the pump suction pipe so is very easy to check.
The pump access is very good via a four bolt panel behind the rh front seat and pump removal a very straightforward and quick job, shame the b....y thing is so expensive!
