hey guys
i have had my 01 eclipse gt for about 3 months now and i have recently noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine compartment. the noise only occurs when im in neutral and my foot is off the clutch. my thought is that the clutch might be bad and catches and releases as the engine is idling causing the rattling noise. a friend who works on his own bmw said it might be a loose bolt in the transmission but the sound seems to be lasting too long(a couple months) for it to be a loose bolt. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Also i am looking to add power to my car(already have CAI) and was thinking of a new clutch or anything that might boost my HP levels. if anybody has any help please reply

thanks in advance

... loose bolt in the transmission...? Loose bolt in his head bro. There would be alot more then just a rattling.

Is it like a swoosh swoosh swoosh sound?

If you have a loose bolt in your transmission, it wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of weeks... trust me. Happened in december.

clutch won't boost your horsepower just makes your transmission able to handle more power when you modify your vehicle.

Neutral rattle with clutch disengaged, it's the throw out bearing. I'm 100% sure.

my friend who works at UPS as a mechanic said it is probably a ??finger?? problem i dont know what that is exactly as i am relatively new to working on cars

the noise is like a rough ticking noise, i would not say that it is a swooshing sound

if anybody knows how much any of these repairs would cost (i.e. ACT clutch kit or throw out bearing) please let me know. i have look at Advanced Auto for a new clutch and they want something like $300 and i dont know if that is a good price or not?

thanks for all the replies!!!

I think I paid 800 installed for an OEM clutch.

Regardless if you have any tranny work done you are going to want to replace the clutch.]

Does the transmission grind when you shift. Is there anything wrong with the clutch? Or is it just a rattle?
