I do remember a thread on this awhile back describing how to repair and re-fill the compass. Seems this is a common problem that can be fixed by DYI but is not described in the manual. Fluid will be something non-conductive & clear like silicone oil.

Hi,
I had to repair the same thing but on a 1991 series 1 Shogun.

If it's of any help this is what I had to do.
The shroud around the instruments was held on by two screws at the side, removing these allows you to take off the shroud and reveals a couple of screws holding the whole lot to the dash.
Unplug the cable, remove the screws and lift the whole lot away.

You can now remove the inclinometer from the set.

My one had emptied itself out from a leak somewhere on the rear of the unit. I cleaned it up, degreased the back and then ran some superglue around the inside rim. Once this had dried I put a fillet of quick dry epoxy resin around the inner rim as well.

To fill the unit I carefully drilled out the plug at the top of the unit. It's not very deep, just a couple of mil's.
Once this is done you can refill the unit with a general purpose 3 in 1 light oil.
Leave it overnight in the upright position and check for leaks.

Reseal the top using a plug of quick dry epoxy.

Last thing is to try and remember how it all goes back together in the car !

Hope it helps. ;)

Dave.

Hi there

I described this project a few months back.

The thin diaphram behind the inclinometer actually cracked after years of usage, leading to the slow leakage of the silicone/compass oil.

As described too by DaveE above, you'd need to dismantle the whole gauge set and take out the inclinometer unit and work to reseal all cracks behind it. Refill it with some light oil, as in my case, I used Glycerin, easily and cheaply available from any pharmacy. DO NOT MIX THE OIL, they are of different density.

Due to the nature of its consruction, the thin plastic backing may develop more cracks later, and you'd probably have to repeat the process in future.

Good luck.

PS: You may want to pull out your radio unit below and check the cable couplings. The leaked oil from above may have short-circuited your speaker cables and you'd be hearing only one side of the speakers. Clean them and wipe dry.
