i own a 2002 eclipse gs with 57000 miles on it no mods. when i accelerate above 4500 or so it stops pulling and makes a sound under the hood like something is winding out for a couple seconds, then when it finaly shifts it will pull a little again. not sure if this will make sense to anyone. any information would be nice. have had the car for a little over a year allway done this.thank you

Um I did have a similar problem with my 03 GS although I'm not sure the sound mine was making was the same as the one you described. Mine was more like a turbo spooling up except I didn't have a turbo. It turned out to be a piece of wood in the stock intake. And mine did what yours is doing it stopped pulling or felt a huge loss of power once I hit about 4500 RPM's. Like I said don't know if it helps but it's a thought.

first take your intake apart and check if anything is causing a loss of air flow.

second see if you need a transmission fluid change. if you have a shifting problem that may be whats going on.

now post some more info on what your hearing, or whats going on. it sounds more like a transmission problem.

the good news is you have the nice 2.4L 4 cylinder. the bad news is the automatic transmission in it sucks @$$.

the GT has a kind of crappy engine with a awesome transmission...

ANOTHER YEAH FOR MITSUBISHI!!!!!!! LOL.

Hey there.

This seems very much like my own problem. My Air filter was loose. so i tightened it up And, Sound gone=)

What I think happened was when running in higher speeds the filter got sucked up under the hood and didn't feed the car with enough air.

Hope this helps=)

Yea it's either your transmission or your air filter. So if either the tranny fluid flush or the intake replacement don't fix it then you probably have a bigger problem within your tranny that will require a good chunk of change, but keep us posted.

Yea it sounded like an intake problem cause my 03 like I said had that same thing, when I hit 4000 RPM's it just lost a ton of power and took me forever to get to 6000. And when it got taken apart there was a piece of wood in there causing the problem.

But glad you got it fixed for cheap, that's always a good thing considering it could've been so much worse.

I had same problem, it made a wining noise, I have a 01 eclipse gt and it turned out it was a trans problem so you might want to check out your fluid level and see if thats ok.

Yea even though the intake fix seemed to take care of the problem it never hurts to check everything out that could be a possible cause of what you're hearing on a car. Good thinkin.

Problem with that philosophy is that we all have eclipses... what isn't wrong with them?

If I had to fix something everytime i heard a noise on my car.... i'd be out there all day every day. Wait.... I pretty much am.

hey man when you do replace your intake remember to get black rubber hosing for your valve cover to intake lines. using the red and blue silicone lines cause O2 sensor problems because it pushes silicone gases into your intake. it will likely trick a check engine light code. use rubber fuel line hosing so you don't get this problem.

also a good way to get better horse power from your stock intake. pull the extra bank box from beneath your filter box off, you will get more air flow into your intake. i'm not talking about your filter box bottom, i'm talking about the extra bank box that simply sits in a hole on the bottom of your filter box. take that off and its like having a WAI, well a choked up one. your stock filter will still restrict some air flow that with a CAI, or WAI you will have better because of the high flow filter.

i live in Seaside Ca and i just recently got a smog test done on my 01 Eclipse RS. i removed the lower box, and have a de-screened MAS. my car passed with better measurements than the average car measurements. so removing the lower box will not fail a emissions test, nor will de-screening your MAS. i have the proof so everyone should do both.

i got my ebay cai and it didn't fit. i would have to move the battery over about 5 in to make it fit. it didn't come with the instructions like it was supposta. i got it from bestcarpart. but in the process i took that box out from underneath the air filter box and it make a lot of difference. adds a little bit of sound to the engine as well. easy free mod. thank you.

Not you, that reply was in reply to bobthecow cause he's a good friend of mine and he does drive his car like an $*&hole.

Sorry if I offended you I should've used the quote function to avoid confusion. But that was talking about bobthecow and how he drives his car.

Dude I shoulda warned you, never buy stuff for your car off of ebay. They usually send you a really crappy product. Or it doesn't fit like it's supposed to in your case. I would go look at K&N typhoon short ram systems for your car cause I have one on mine and it fits like a dream. Sounds really good to and I feel alot better throttle response that you don't get nearly as much with a CAI.
