im upgrading my brakes for my '00 eclipse gs.... i have everything torn down to the hub unit but i also want to replace the hub units as well... my cv axle is pretty much froze up inside the hub unit and i am going to take it somewhere to knock it out because i cant even break it free with a gear puller... how can i disconnect the cv axle from the transmission? what are the steps? i called numerous automotive shop and they said that it sometimes just needs a pull and it will slip out but thats not working...need help pronto... quick responses with knowledgeable answers would be very appreciated...

first of all, why do you not have a hanes or chilton manual? the manual says it should just slip out, if not tap the shaft with a soft hammer or a hammer and a soft metal drift. i just use a short 2 X 4 and it seems to work fine for me. i have never heard of a trans axle having problems coming out of the transmission unless a serious problem happened with the transmission.

even then, all you have to do is put a breaker bar up behind the axle right where the shaft expands from the splines to the shaft, then using a suspension knuckle breaker against another part of your car or engine as a pivot point to bridge it. pull on the top and just simply pop it out. if that won't work due to your engine being on top of your axle.

set it up so you wrap a ratchet strap around the shaft, then tighten it so the strap won't slide down(use a ratchet strap that is directly connected to the outer part of the assembly itself then goes back through the ratcheting shaft.) then use some back bone to pull on it from outside your car. using the quarter panel just outside your wheel well as foot holds. remember to watch out, when it comes out your looking at a possible projectile drive shaft hitting you in the face or the balls. i don't think anyone would want that to happen to them!!!!!

if this also does not work, i suggest you take it to a shop. i'm pretty sure they can get some sort of hydraulic press to get it out. but its going to be just as hard to get it done by them.

you mentioned you couldn't get it to budge with a gear puller. did you happen to use a 2 jaw gear puller? the manual i have suggests that for removing the hub assembly from the drive shaft. unless you broke the gear puller attempting to remove the hub assembly. i don't think you tried hard enough to remove it. get a socket and a ratchet on the gear puller, and get a very long bar that will fit over the ratchet so you can get more leverage. then push on it. that should give you enough force to break the splines loose.

good luck with everything bro and if you don't get it out it looks like your going to have to pay the money for a shop to do it.

i went and bout a haynes manual and did everything you told me which was in there as well.... i got the driveaxel off but it was so frozen inside the hub that i took it to a guy i know that owns an auto shop and we unfortunately had to bang the end of the thread out and grind it off so that it would go through the hub... needless to say the axle had to be ruined to get it off no matter what... but thanks for the tips man... appreciate it
