your mechanics answer was completely correct. the only way to repair that is to replace the catalytic converter.

The reading may be due to a faulty O2 sensor which if has a heater in it (4 wire type) will give a faulty reading. They are not that expaensive especially if you go with an aftermarket type ($70). If you go this way you will probably have to splice in the existing plug.

It is a different senerio if the Cat has failed and needs replacement. Weather you repair or replace (inc complete removal) depends on the emission controls you have in your location. Many other owners have decided to remove the Cat completely and start running a different fuel, such as ethanol to reduce exhaust emissions. This has several performance advantages but you must know what you are doing and if it is the right choice for you.

a failed heater in an O2 sensor has its own code... and even if it didnt, you would get a code for the O2 sensor being inactive.

im afraid that "failed cat." codes are incredibly accurate.
