okay i got a huge question to ask....i own a 2003 eclipse gs which has the 4g64 SOHC engine. im going to do a DOHC swap and i want to swap mine with the 1g head. i know it sounds impossible but i dont think so myself. the only problem i can think of is that the crankshaft on the 1g is located on the right side of engine if looking at engine and mine is on the left but the question is.....can the timing gears be switched on the head around to the left side to be able to line up with my crankshaft?? cuz if you look at the 1g head it has cutouts on the left side(opposite side of crankshaft and timing gears) and it looks like the cam and everything could be swapped around to make my plan work. but can that actually be done??? please give feedback anyone!

it is possible to do a 4G63 head swap on a 4G64 block. remember though, the non turbo motors for the G1/G2 eclipse is a 420A motors (dodge motor) the motors that come on the stock Turbo G1 and G2 eclipse is called a 4G63T. if you can really get a G1 4G63T head for a $100 i say get it and do the switch. yeah it may not give you as much HP as the EVO head will, but a SOHC to a DOHC swap is enough alone. also with the 4G63 head you don't have to worry about hood clearance. the EVO head is a lot taller than the 4G63 head.

if you do get the head, while its out you might as well port and polish it. i'm not sure, but i believe that is another modification that the EVO head comes with and the eclipse head does not. aside from larger piston head clearance, and being polished and ported. i believe they are practically the same. you can bolt a evo head on a G1 and G2 4G63T motor. so why if the evo head will bolt to the 4G64 block would the 4G63T head not do the same? well it does, so don't even worry about it.

i believe after you buy a evo head you have to get a custom head gasket made for it though. might be true as well for the 4G63 head swap, i'm not exactly sure about that so don't quote me on it.

hope that helps you a little better. i believe the pinned post about the evo head swap does talk a little about how the 4G64, the 4G63T , and the EVO motors are all similar. something about the 4G64 motor being a SOHC but stroked version of the DOHC 4G63T motor, and the EVO motor being a performance equivalent head for the 4G64 motor.

I'd just wait and ask one of the moderators.

Cause I know for certain that the Evo 4-7 head will fit.

The only possible problem is that the 1g might have an opposite orientation from ours. Or everything might spin the opposite way in our cars.

But I don't know for sure so wait for one of the moderators to tell you if it's ok or not before you go and try and do anything.

My GS is a 5spd and I love my car. Not a single problem yet with it besides normal maintenance.

And I didn't realize that about doing a head swap. Gives me a little more education and info for if I ever get asked that question again.

And you're right the 4cyls are the best potential for getting power out of them. People with the 6g72 I kinda feel sorry for them if they want to make their cars faster than they already are cause there's just not that much you can do to them.

so your saying taking the 4g63t head off and flip the whole head around to fit my engine or just set it like it sits on the 4g63t on mine and just flip the cams around?

For that specific of a question ask either bobthecow or EMC3000GT. They'll give you the simplest response possible. Cause I don't wanna give you false info on stuff I'm not too sure about.

Like I know the Evo 4-7 head will fit our engines. But I'm not sure about the 1g or 2g 4g63t heads. So I'd ask one of those 2 moderators. Actually recently bobthecow is an admin now.

I know but in that head swap post that eclipsed4utoo did he said something about the orientation being reversed in the other Evo's and I didn't know if that applied to the 1g and 2g 4g63T engine.

That's why I said what I did.
