In order to dim the CD player, you must first have the dimmer wire plugged in. Most aftermarket CD players and wiring harnesses don't come with a dimmer function. Most of the time, dimmer wires that run for your car are only for the stock cd player. The aftermarket head unit should just have a function in the menu that allows it to dim.

If not, I have heard that you can manually tap the dimmer wire into your interior light(gauge dim/bright) and it can do it. But then you will lose clarity in your gauges at night.

...I dont know if you already got it because this is a little late but i have the alpine cde9881 and theres a setup button that you press and it has the dimmer function in it. Im pretty sure its setup, if not the button next to the mute button. Hope that helps if you havent already figured it out..

also a lot of people just get a tint strip and tint the front panel where the lights are super bright. enough to darken the lights during night, but little enough the lights shine through during the daytime. not exactly the professional way to do it, but it works great.
