Hi there,
Just wondered if anyone else has attempted repairs on the window regulator unit. when i bought my gto a few months back both windows only went down 4 inches. I searched about and found you can only buy an entirely new regulator to fix the problem. not happy with this i tinkered away, i fixed the pully on the regulator with help from this page http://www.clan-davidson.com/jd/vr4/garage/windowreg/ and then found the major issue was much deeper. so throwing caution to the wind i took the whole unit apart and tinkered some more, i currently have one fully working window :D and it cost me... £4.00 yes thats it, £4.00. and the parts were easily available. im not saying it is the same as having a brand new regulator im sure it wont last as long and wil wear out eventually but for £4 i can turn the air conditioning off :D (i sound like a salesman lol, "you can have piece of mind, saftey, fresh air and many other wonderfull bonuses for only £4 (terms and conditions apply)" ;) ).

i was just wondering if anyone else had repaired the unit rather than replacing?
if so how did they do it and what parts did they use?
if not then would it be of any value to people if i posted a lengthly how to?

I would be interested, as I have several here that are damaged. I believe there was someone else repairing them and reselling them on ebay, but I am not sure how he did it.

I'm interested as well because there is some money to be made as they can easily go for 100 + on ebay.

Did mine about a year back.... got the walkthrough from the davidson-clan too. Repairing the unit should be listed on there. If you can't find it there search on stealth316.com. Hes got so much crap for these cars!
It was a two man job. One to hold the window and one to do the actual work. while your in there make sure to grease the tracks too. plan on about an hour or so.
The part that always breaks is the top plastic guide, It always snaps. I have seen people support theirs with aluminum, but mine was too far broken to do that with.

the problem with mine was two fold.

firstly the plastic runner at the top of the regulator was broken. i fixed this with two very small bolts (could use rivets) and a fairly large amount of strong glue. it works perfectly now. i suppose it depends on where it is cracked or broken as to how easy it is to fix.

the second problem was way inside the unit with the wire system. i believe this was caused while the plastic runner was broken. i'll put the how to on hold just now as a part of the repair broke yesterday and the window fell down. it was my fault as i snagged the wire as i was fitting it and it snapped after it ran round a few times. i have new wire and im off to sort it just now, i suppose the good thing is i can take a few more pictures i missed the first time round. will post back if successful, fingers crossed!

OK so im at a junction waiting to go, went to wind the window down and... WHoosh it drops all the way from top to bottom and wouldnt work, not good! so i drove home that night, put a tarpaulin (cut up ikea bag) over it and left it till today. this morning i put blocks of wood in to hold it up untill i could fix it. on the way to work the wood slips and the window drops ajar. And it rained, and rained and rained and the car got a wee bit wet :( however i have redone the whole thing, again... and it's looking good at the moment. put more tension on this time did everthing as well as could possibly be done. fingers crossed. i dont dare wind it down untill after the 700 mile trip to coventry and back i have to do on thurdsay.

Anyway i decided that i would start writing the how to fix your crummy window regulator. dont know if i should post it here or as a new topic when i've finished it??

Right i've finished it, all i need is the best way to post it, it would be nice if i could just post it as an attached word document to a post. is this possible? if not do i just have to paste it all into a post and link to the pictures from photobucket or something? Cheers.

If you use photo bucket please continue to host the photos indefinitely.

You can also upload the photos and use this site to host them.

The best way for the words would be to just copy and paste the words into the reply box and do it that way.
