HI

Just got a recon 3.5v6 for our 96 Shogun. (original threw valves)

Question is this, the new engine is in and running except it is pinking under load. Mechanic and we, think that its a timing issue, but timing is spot on according to mechanic, and is controlled by ecu anyway. Engine suppliers suggested our ecu at fault, but we had no prior problems so we dont think its that.

Is it possible to manually time that year shogun, know you could with the older ones.? or any mitsubishi techs out there know if you can do that using the Mutt 2??

(dont want to have to put it into a dealership unless we have to £££)

Cheers

Luvbug

My Brother has a Pajero 1997 and my uncle a 1996 both came with DOCH MIVEC heads , as many with DOCH heads were MIVEC. The pinging can be knock retard frum very low octane gas , but in lots of cases timing that is overlly advancing. If it is a DOCH engine , yud want to make sure that all cams are on mark. Also yu can check the ign ignition timing with a timing light . On the firewall there is going to be a timing connector with a water proof cap. The timing should be checked while the vehicle is at operating temperatures . Checked first with a timing light, then with the timing connector umped to ground .

It is possible that the recon engine , when the Cam/TDC sensor was installed it could be slightly off , thus on excelleration over advancing the ignition timing causing the pinging noise.

Might also be faulty or poor elcetrical connections to knock sensors. The ECU also has to advance the timing under load which may be a similiar problem with electrical connectors. I had lots of unrelated problems due to poor contact with pins & sockets. Remove and clean all under engine bay with emery cloth. Make sure you are also running 95+ octane fuel with low sulfur content as this will play havoc on engine if not.

Thanks both of you for your suggestions. Greatly appreciated. Will be paying the garage a visit with our findings.

Will let you know how we get on.

Many thanks
