I don't know to much about 3000 gt's but I have been wanting one for a very long time.

Thinking about buying a 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT GT with 87,886 miles on it, for
$4,995.

I'm about to head off to college (graduate wed. june 4th :D). I've read that this car can be very expensive to get fixed, and is VERY technical so its hard to do it your self. I am wondering if this is going to be a big problem. Also how is the gas? I'll be driving alot. I read that it uses premium gas and has around 16 mpg in city. Is this right?

The VR-4 gets about 16mpg city. With the regular 3000gt you should get about 20-24

I averaged 19 using premium back when I used it as a commuter car...

Mostly backroads and highway.

Best I saw was 25 on the highway. worst I've seen is 11 on a track day.

But in normal driving I don't think I ever saw below 17 or higher then 21.

The biggest problem is that the buy in price for these cars has dropped very low. Because of this people who can not afford the upkeep of them are able to buy in and then because they can not afford the repairs that are mandatory the car gets junked.

The parts are expensive. The car is not because people see so many junked ones.

The reason people see so many junked ones is because the people who own them can not take care of them.

If you can readily hand over $2000 for a repair bill don't buy the car.

Heres what stuff costs

700 - 1200 for a clutch job

900 - 2200 for the full 60k tune up (timing belt, water pump, all belts and pulleys, timing tensioner, Spark plugs & wires, air filter, fuel filter)

labor on the front brakes $300 (Not including parts)

front rotors 80 - 180 for one. (you need 2)
Rear rotors 90 - 200 For one. (you need 2)

Transmission FWD - 1800 new from Mitsubishi.
labor to install that - 500 - 1200

Changing the plugs and wires will run you about $150 your self and is a 2 hour job the first time. You will need 6 NGK plugs 6 wires 1 intake manifold gasket one throttle body gasket.

I have personally (verified thru the HHH datalogger) noticed an unacceptable amount of knock from using 87 octane fuel. (9 count)

Use 91 or better

-- Cliff Notes--

The initial buy in price of the cars going so low, people who can't afford to keep them can afford the initial buy in, then whine incessantly about the upkeep and upgrade costs.

changing the plugs only cost me about $70NZ to iridium plugs and about $30NZ for the 2 gaskets

depends where you buy them from, plus i havent done the wires tho.

did take about 2hours tho but i wasnt rushing

haaha i read the 87 octane and almost choked!!! here in NZ we got 91, 95 and 98
i always run my GTO on 98, i ran it on 91 once and it was pretty poor, id hate to experience 87!! feel sorry for you guys haah
