I was wondering if there was any way to take a MIVEC head and swap it to a non MIVEC engine. I have a 91 Eclispe GS with the 4G63 (2.0L) motor and I thought it might be a fun project to try. I just figured I would find out more info before I went looking for a MIVEC head to get. I know that, for Hondas, there are some engines that do not have VTEC and that you can take the head from a VTEC engine and do a swap so that you do have VTEC because it bolts right up. (I have a friend that did it). I don't know if its the same for DSM's. Let me know if it is possible and what engine I should look at getting my parts form if I can do it. Thanks!! :gunsmilie:

Ok, after doing some of my own research I read that the 4G63T comes with MIVEC, Is that true? If so, would I be able to just swap the cams and still use my stock valve cover? I am assuming that if I do put MIVEC cams in that I would also have to tune the ECU, correct?

Its only on the EVO 9 and its only on the exhaust cam. Not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Ok. That leads me to another question (since I do not know a lot about the exact engine specifics). Aren't the Intake and exhaust cams the same? If so, theoretically wouldn't one be able to swap a MIVEC cam in place of both to get a little more of a power boost? This is one of the many crazy ideas I have all the time and become REALLY curious about. :D And the unfortunate fact is that, until I get outstanding information telling me that I can not do it, I want to find a way to do it and can't get it off my mind. I mean, seriously... if I'm having dreams about it there's gotta be something wrong with me... :P

Also, how exactly does a hydraulic cam work??? I was reading up on it the other day and got kinda confused...

Thanks!!

May be out of my range on this but as far as i kno the EVO 7 and 8 had MIVEC( Evolution MR 8 both intake and exhaust) on the exhaust and the 9 had it on both exhaust and intake with lift control on the intake side. But i think this was just in sum regions that had more less strict emissions standards.

Hydraulic cams? That one sort of has meeh , but i think yu are referring to the hydraulic lifter setup in the DOCH engines. If so im sure its similar to a trick we have been messing with for year. There is a roller cam follower that sits under the cam and is hydraulically adjusted by he hydraulic lifter via oil pressure. A trick i started doing on DOCH Mitsubishi heads is that on the rear of the head there are capped screws that cap of auxilary access to the oil channel that the oil feeds thru for the hydraulic lifters . Since when the cam is opening the valve the hydraulic lifter gives a little , in these capped ports we install pressure solenoids , like that on the VE30DE Nissan engines, the principle is easy , as the range of rpm increases , like 4000 up or so , the solenoid engages closing off the return oil flow keeping high pressure of oil in the valve lifters so they do not give , the end result is the valve opens a greater amount increasing power , and the ability to take in more air at upper end. There are many ways to set up the solenoids to work accordinglly , but of course they should not be set to be on at low rpm .
