Hello gents,

Got a question for you guys. Does anyone know the torque specs for the head bolts and valve cover for the 4G63T?

I have no idea where my manual is and couldn't find it when I searched. My new head gasket (metal cometic) just came in and I need to fix it ASAP!

**Side note: Has anyone ever seen a head gasket just leak oil right behind the exhause manifold? not burning coolant, not running hot, good oil pressure, good compression and everything, still runs/idles fine, just hemmorages oil from behind the exhaust mani. I thought it was wierd, i know the 420a has a common problem with it leaking from the corners under the intake mani, but never heard of this in a 4g63.**

i've never really noticed anything like that except from where EMC said, the valve cover gasket.

If the head gasket is stock it's probably a better idea to replace it anyway. the valve cover bolts should be torqued to 14ft.lbs and I will check my manual when I get home for the head bolt spec unless someone beats me to it

The manual says the torque sequence is:

Step 1: 58 ft/lbs
Step 2: Loosen completely
Step 3: 15 ft/lbs
Step 4: tighten 1/4 turn
Step 5: Tighten another 1/4 turn

front of engine ->
7 5 2 4 10
9 3 1 6 8

Now I dont know about everyone else but that seems kind of odd that you would loosen the bolts completely during a torque sequence.

Yeah, i would call that a tad wierd. But hey, if it works, it works. I was going to go ARP, but I really don't need it.

If I do any upgrades, it will probably not be any bigger than a T28. FWD DD, so I really don't need any more than that. I just went with the Cometic matal because I didn't want to change it again.... ever, haha.

Thank you gents for all your help.

Head is back on, new gates racing kevlar timing and balance shaft belt, new water pump, and all new timing, balance shaft idler/tensioner pullys replaced. Royal purple oil and K&N oil filter.

RUNS BETTER THAN EVER!

One problem though. 14 ft lbs cannot possibly be the right spec for the valve cover bolts. It mashed the gasket really hard, broke the head off of one of the bolts and cracked my volve cover. Thank god for jb weld, it should hold until I get another one.

Speaking of which, does anyone have a volve cover lying around?

Ok this might sound weird to but the Haynes manual says 30 in/lbs which when calculated to ft/lbs comes out to about 2.5. How you measure 2.5 ft/lbs is beyond me.

Yeah well, got some bad info from someone...

***cough...cough...peewee....cough...cough***

I thought it sounded wierd, should have just went with my gut instinct and just tightened them down snug. Ultimately my fault. At least the head bolt torque was right, that's a bit more important.

14ftlbs is for the oil pan. 30 inlbs is for the valve cover like wayne said, or snug. You really can't measure 2.5ftlbs you have to use inlbs or newtons if you have a 3/8 torque wrench.
