I bought a 1998 eclipse gs with 96K miles on it. upon purchase there was only a slight leak around the head gasket. After about a week i noticed that the car was dripping oil. So i took it to the mechanic where he replaced the head gasket and the oil pan gasket. the oil pan gasket was in bad shape it was over torqued by 50lbs. so we cleaned up the car and i drove it home. two days later i noticed it was dripping oil again. now i am being told it could be one of two things. the oil pressure regulator or the rear main seal. i am going broke here, any ideas?

My 93 real main seal is leaking... :( its a sad sight. Oil leaks are something you have to get used to with these cars.

If the oil pan was over torqued by 50 lbs, you might have done some damage to the pan, thus creating a place for the oil to come out

What...? There is no way any of the bolts on an oil pan will even begin to hold 50ft/lbs. They are to be torqued to 7 they break at about 9.

An 8 month old can break these bolts with their gummed over teeth.

If you mechanic said that you need to find a new one.

Put card board down over night in the morning look at the card board and figure out where the leak is. then jack the car up and pin point exactly where the leak is.

My guess is its the oil pan again.

:57: If it is the rear main seal and you don't feel like pulling the engine out to fix it, you have a few optiojns.

A. Ignore it, get oil all over your driveway, and add oil every few weeks.

Or...

B. Create a makeshift engine diaper (or buy one), set it up under your engine, change it every week, and add oil every few weeks.

I chose option B :57:

You don't have to pull the motor to fix it. drop the transmission, cut old seal out.

Lube new seal hammer it in put transmission back on.

all my quotes have been in the thousand dollor range does that seem about right? Are these cars known for the oil pressure regulators going bad? if i pay to have this fixed where could the oil come from next? head gasket has been replaced, oilpan gasket has been replaced. what would i have to fix next?

What exactly are they replacing?

Rear main seal?

Oil pressure sending unit?

I'm guessing that removing the transmission is most of the way there in replacing the clutch? I imagine rear seal replacement would be a given. (Some on this board seem to consider it a big job, no experience myself!)

they are replacing the rear main seal? could it be the oil pressure sending unit? there is too much oil to tell where it is really coming from, but my car seems to b losing very little on the dip stick.

Pretty sure the two things are on opposite sides of the engine. Gonna have to wait for Pwee for this one.
