My 1995 (Made in Japan) RVR is auto & has overdrive. There is a switch between the seats near the gear shift that has "A/T mode" on it & I am wondering what it does. I am also not sure if it is 2.0 Litre or 1.8 Litre & if it is full time 4WD, how would I tell?

If there is only one gear control and two diffs under the car then it is full time 4 wheel drive. Does the A/T switch have Hold and Power next to it and corresponding indicator lights on the dash board. The gear shift leaver will also have an overdrive switch on the RHS and a light on the dash to show when the overdrive is off.

Yes when I push the switch "HOLD" lights up on the dash, so does that means the gear is held longer thus more power/response? Yes it has just one gear shift so must be full time 4WD, should it run on 96 octane petrol? It seems to pink a little on 91?

I bought a 95 RVR Jap import for my mother in-law. It appers to be the same as yours (auto, full time 4WD, 1.8l, etc).

The HOLD/POWER/ECO A/T button is supposto vary the auto trans torque converter to when it shifts from one gear to the next. If in ECO mode it will shift as fast as possible where the Power mode will hold in alot longer. Hold mode should keep the tranny in the gear your in without shifting up. In general use Eco for normal highway driving, Power for hill climbing and trailer towing and Hold when going down hill on ice. In practice, depending on the condition of your vehecile, it doesn't work very well and sometimes makes no differnce at all to what Mode you select. I found by putting in some tranny additive the gearbox worked better and the settings did what they were supposto do. Not that my Mother-in-law cared.

thanks Benckj.

my question was sufficiently answered. :)

btw, mine is a 2.0L engine with slight modifications to suit my needs- changed to bigger tires, lift, and a gas-saving device (doubt on this if it really works :( )

the a/t button is a simple "hold in gear solenoid" it won't allow the gear to change in any other gear except if you manually shift the gear yourself.
eg......if you press the at button while at a stand still position and 3rd gear is selected, it will try and take off in 3rd and and only stay in that gear as for any other gear.

I found with mine that while traveling long distance, I engange the hold button once I have reached my preffered traveling speed. Granted it is not cruise control but it saved a load of fuel.

Power works good when you need to overtake in a hurry, otherwise in normal town or city driving I just leave it in normal mode.

Regards

S
