 4th Gear-o.d., shift problem

my 91 montero wont shift in 4th also the o.d. button doesent work any ideas????

Well the reason it isnt shifting into 4th gear is because the button isnt working. OD is an overrun clutch of the 4th , so when OD is off it mainlly shifts onlee the 1st thru 3rd gears. 4th gear is onlee enabled when the over drive switch is on. Some of the older models had a fuse Specifically for the OD switch in teh panel. But lots of them teh switch itself usually is faulty.

The overdrive is controlled by several variables.

It doesn't switch in until the engine is at operating temperature for a start.
A lot of the guys on this forum have had this problem in the past and it usually seems to come down to either the solenoid on the gearbox or, more likely, one of the temperature sensors on the thermostat housing.
