Hi all ... I am new here and by the looks of it, I'm pretty sure I've come to the right place to get an answer ...

I have a 1999 Verada, 3.5, auto ... the problem I have is when the handbrake has been on (over night or even after a short while - like 5 mins or so) when I release the handbrake and drive off, there is a nasty squealing. I can get the squealing to go away if the handbrake is pulled on slightly for say 50 meters or so, or if I reverse about 2 car lengths before going forwards.

This happens no matter how tight the handbrake has been pulled on (and I don't pull it on that tight ... 2 to 4 clicks). It is parked on close to level ground over night and during the day mostly on the level - I do a lot of driving so it varies a lot.

I have spoken to a number of mechanics, and they have said that this is a comman thing for this model of magna / verada ... I just dont beleive that it can't be fixed!!!

Can anyone offer any suggestions? or has had the same issue and got it fixed??

Car has just been serviced, and mechanic told they adjusted the handbrake (said that last time too, but still squeales),

Thanks in advanced! :57:

:00000732: to the forums

try this

apply the handbrake and jack up each side at the back wheels

see if you can spin the wheel
if you can get a tyre to spin

the handbrake cable adjustments are not equal on both sides

Thus i have seen this on my model and many models here liek it between 1996-01 ,mine is AWD the brakes are a little bigger but same issue. Inside the rear brake rotor contains the hand brake shoe in the drum area of the rotor. Unlike the previous model this one is a mono shoe design, they collect dust debris etc and also the auto adjuster at times adjusts too far out causing the shoe to wear down easily causing the noise. One way to tell tho as chain rattle explained is to apply the hand brake and lift the car up , and attempt to spin the wheel , to gauge if oen side had bad hand brakje shoes etc. ive seen it alot , one side is grabbing and the other just sorta doing much of nothing , To inspect the hand brake shoes yu will need to remove the wheels , unbolt the caliper frum the spindle , and remove the brake rotor , if the rotor is hard to remove , there are (2) 12MM bolt holes in the rotor in between the wheel studs that yu can put a 12 MM bolt in each side and screw in on it to push the rotor out, if its difficult to get it off the hand brake shoes could have worn a channel on the inside of the rotor's drum area , thus then the onlee option is , in the rotor area near one of the lug studs will be a rubber seal thats removable , when its removed yu can access the self-auto adjuster on the inside of the rotors drum area ,so yu can adjust in on it to be able to remove the rotor .

Oh and WELCOME
