hey guys, i tried to find posts about this but there really wanst anything that was specific for the situation i got. basically, my car smokes white smoke. There are only specific times the car smokes (from the exhaust), from time to time when its idle, when its been left off for a while, after it rains hard, when i brake hard, and when going up a steep hill. Im guessing there is a leak somewhere, but i really have not had the money to bring it to a mechanic (i know i shouldnt cheap out on my car but i REALLY have no money for it), cuz ive been in bad financial situations lately. So basically, i really would like to know how bad this problem is to fix, if anyone knows what it possibly is? i also have an oil leak, which seems pretty bad, and im not sure if these problems are linked, i have finally caught a break and am starting to save up to fix my car, ANY help would be appreciated, thanks

Be gentle on the car it sounds like its your head gasket.

agreed. pull your dipstick and see what the oil looks like. if it looks like chocolate milk do not drive it anywhere. if it still looks like oil then the only place I would drive it is to the shop, or to the garage to replace the head gasket.

are you losing coolant also?

im not sure how to check the coolant? this has been happening for a while but so far i ahvent gotten any warning lights for the coolant (radiator right?), and never had probhlems with overheating or anything, i will check the dipstick when i get out of work. Head gaskets cost alot to repair right? and does that have anything to do with my engine making a whistling noise between 60 and 64 mph? lol i cannot believe i paid so much for this thing

If you have the knowledge and skill to take the head off yourself then you can do it yourself and its not a big deal.

It may take a while you to leak enough coolant to get a warning light or overheat. Frequently check your resevor. There is a product out there which clames to reseal your headgasket called like headgasket fix or something. I bought a bottle but have yet to use it (due to other issues with the car) but you can always try that and see if it works :/

Taking the head off is not something you want to do as your first mechanic experience ever unless you have an actual ASE or equivalent mechanic you can run to when you have a question.

I would just baby the car right now. My head gasket on my honda was going out for 2 years and I beat it everyday and it still ran when I sold it... Nitrous couldn't even kill that thing.

the whistle is probably your transmission. is it like a dull low tone when you are barely touching the gas?

:offtopic: you wouldn't see a DSM last that long :P http://youtube.com/watch?v=Or5qif80xQo and it also proves you can lube a honda with water instead of oil
