Has anybody done a timing belt themselves on a 2003 2.4L eclipse? I''m looking through the shop manual and there are a bunch of special tools listed. Just wondering if I can get by without them. Any other pointers would be welcome.

Have a great day!

what "shop" book are you reading from? i have a haynes manual and it doesn't really have that many special tools, maybe one. and i'm pretty sure you can either rent the tool from autozone or have mitsubishi push your timing belt tensioner cylinder back in for you. it takes off of like 2 minutes to do it. what are they going to do charger for 2 minutes worth of work? they will probably do it for free.

The "shop" manual is the Mitsubishi Service Manual.
The tools are
MD998738 Adjusting Screw Wrench
MD998767 Tensioner Wrench
For doing an adjustment on the TB tensioner. Im not sure if this is required after a TB change or just to check to see if the tensioner still puts out proper tension on the belt.
MD991367 Special Spanner Wrench
To hold the crankshaft in place while removing the crankshaft pulley for the balancing belt. Can you get the belt out without removing the pulley?
Maybe I'll just dive into this and find these things out as I go.

spanner wrench can be changed to a screw driver put in the little hole. you'll understand when you get there.

03clypse said C-clamp for the tensioner. once you get the tensioner pushed in you can use a small hex key to put in the little retaining hole to keep the tnesioner cylinder from pushing out while your mounting it back up.. (hex key, aka. allen wrench)

as far as a special wrench for the tensioner, or tensioner pulley. i'm sure a regular wrench could suffice.

Most of the time special tools are not all that special.

Supposedly you need a special tool to change brake pads... the book says you need to get it from mitsubishi to compress them.

I like to call this tool a C-clamp.
