I recently purchased a 2003 Spyder Gt 5 speed and was considering doing a cam upgrade. I searched for someone that has a cam upgrade and didn't find it hence my post. I know RPW is supposed to make it and one of the members here distributes their products and would like more information on them.

Thanks in advance!

Find a 3000GT and pull the cams out of there. Same engine and the cams were better I believe and might give you a slight boost in hp. Or you can do a head swap from the DOHC 3000GT and get more hp and better cams. Just a thought.

Upgrading cams is borderline 100% unecessary until further down the modification line.

True but he asked the question so I just figured I'd give him one solution. Not trying to steer him in the wrong direction or anything, sorry if that's the way it seemed though.

I'm always up for advice like this, if it doesn't help me it might help someones else that sees this post. A cam job would not be my first upgrade. I plan on taking the second cat off, then exhaust(for sound/economy reasons, not so much power), then intake then I'd be looking at the cam.

You're talking about the non-turbo engine right? If so I'm not sure if 8-12hp increase. More importantly then that is would I need the computer reprogrammed? The reprogramming isn't that huge of a deal because after My mods are done I plan on having it professionally dyno tuned anyway.

I don't know about having to reprogram your computer or anything, but the 3kGT had a DOHC N/A engine as well as the VR4 Twin Turbo engine. You could pull the head off of a N/A 3kGT and it would give you a decent boost in hp, but it won't be cheap to do that's for sure.

Cheap for the head or the other parts like gaskets? Would I need to do an intake swap too? does the DOHC have the variable intake like the gts engine(or the spyder v6 gt like mine)?

The head should bolt right up and so should the intake manifold and everything. I don't know specifics about doing it to the 6g72. so if you're serious about wanting to do it, ask one of the moderators like EMC3000GT or SC-Customs or Pwee about it cause they are more knowledgable about specifics on these kinds of jobs. But they'll most likely tell you that it's pointless and you're wasting your money.

They'd probably be right because the cost of doing the head conversion would be pointless unless I was willing to spend even more to build up the bottom end of the engine too. What is it that makes the DOHC so much better then the SOHC? They are both 4v heads right? Or is it just that the DOHC head was just plainly designed to flow more air then the SOHC? Maybe it's all in the cam(s) profile?

DOHC is more efficient in making power I believe because of the fact that each cam only does one job instead of the SOHC doing both. Because each one only has to operate one cylinder bank as opposed to the SOHC having to do both.
