Ok so I finally got the engine in the car and finally got it started. Now here's the problem. Coolant is leaking into the 2nd cylinder and the oil. I put a new gasket on when I rebuilt the engine and we torqued it to the specifications in the Haynes book. What do you guys think about this? Should I just torque the head some more? Not sure what to do here; any suggestions would help.

I can't say exactly why that is happening, but I don't think torqueing it any more will help. It might be that the surface wasn't true (perfectly level). You may have to take it to get machined or something. Since you may have to remove everything anyways, grab a level and lay it across the block. Make notes of any valleys or hills, as this won't let the gasket seat right. Also, if you reused the same head studs/bolts, that could also be the problem. I remember quite vaguely about them stretching so when you remove them, they don't work again. You would have to get new studs/bolts.

Although I have no actual engine building experience so this is all from gathering info for my build. These are just options to consider.

+1 all good info

how did you torque them? Did you end with a 1/4 turn using a breaker bar?

Ya we ended with a quarter turn and I had the cylinder serviced at a cylinder head shop so it should be machined just fine. Torquing it more won't help?

no it won't help and you could warp the head.

did you have the block machined or just the head? what headgasket are you using?

I only had the head serviced not the block. I am using a multi layered steel head gasket. I called Mitsubishi and there torque specs were 15 lbs more than the Haynes book said so we torqued to Mitsubishi's recommendation. Still leaking coolant in the cylinders and oil through the intake!!!???? I think at this point I will take it in to the shop and let them deal with it :crying:

Yeah well, either that, or, not to insult your intelligence, but you coule have the gasket upside down. It does look similar both ways and It would expain your problem and be the easiest thing to fix.....

Your not insulting my intelligence. This is my first project and before this, I didn't know much. My buddy helped me and he does know cars. He's built 5 engines before this one but I will ask him about the gasket. So this really could cause the problem?

No matter what the problem is, you are going to have to pull off your head, so check the gasket and check if your deck is nice and flat.

So I had a mechanic come look at it and he did a compression check. 2nd and 3rd cylinder read about 175, 1st and 4th cylinder read only 65. I'm gonna pull the head off and take it in for a magnaflux. Could it be the block? We checked the cylinders before I bought it but I was told it could have cracks. The leak is coming from where the head meets the block so I would think it would have to be the head, right? If it is the head can it be repaired, or is it better to buy a new one?

if the block is cracked it could be leaking where the head and block meet. IF its at the mating surface it could be either or. If the head or the block is cracked buy a new one.
