TuX_69 was asking me how my CAI installation went and asked me to supply some pictures of how everything was done. Injen provides you with all the necessary instructions on how to install the CAI, but nothing on the front bumper. I went the alternate route and did everything through my underpanel, wheelwell, and fog light. Upon writing up the PM to send back to TuX_69, I realized that this information was too good to just give to one person... so I share it with all of you!

Just note that this will show you ONLY how to access the underpanel and wheelwell without breaking anything. As for the rest of the CAI installation, Injen provides you with detailed images and steps for both manual and CVT transmissions. Just work your way around the bumper :grin:

Tools required:
+ Phillips screwdriver
+ Flathead screwdriver
+ 10mm socket wrench (optional, but it will be required for the complete CAI install)

Step 1: Removing the underpanel

It's fairly painless. Using a flathead screwdriver, pop out each of the tabs. As you can see, I am missing one. When I installed mine, my clumsy friend left one on the floor and he stepped on it, rendering it useless. So please note... keep them safe! Result...

Step 2: Removing the wheelwell

This is where it gets a little tricky. You will need to turn your wheel inwards (to the right) in order to access the first 2 screws. These can be removed using a phillips screwdriver. They are exactly the same as the ones used in the vent for the stock airduct. Once you remove these, you need to access two more pins...

The one in the far back is just like the ones on the underpanel. However, the other one is a real pain. It's not a 2 piece pin like the rest. This is one solid pin. You can still pry it out with a flathead and yank it out with your fingers once you can get a good grip on it. There is one final screw you need to get out. I couldn't get a good picture of it, so instead...

It's a combination 10mm nut with a cross thread inside. You could use the phillips to get it out, but they are usually pretty tight. I did it with the 10mm socket wrench (plus an extension) because I didn't want to strip the threading. Once you get everything out, you can push the wheelwell away from you (towards the engine) and pull it out. Result...

You can see the filter and curve pipe (as well as my remounted tranny cooler and my HID ballast for my left fog :grin: ). You should be able to pull it back far enough to get your hand and forearm in. From here you would pull down on the black tubing while feeding it down from your hood. The curve pipe and filter can be put in from the underpanel. Use a flathead screwdriver with a long neck and wide head when securing these clamps... it makes it several times easier!

You will need to remove the fog light housing to complete the CAI installation because of the location for the vibration mounts for the curve pipe. The fog light is easy to take out, so pictures aren't necessary here.

This is an awesome thread that you put together for those who do not want to remove the front bumper. Wouldnt it be just as easy to take off the tire as well to gain better access to these screws and pins??

I thought long and hard about getting my lancer in blue, but the wife discouraged it. I figured black is a great compromise, other than having to wash it at least every 10 days. All y'all with the blue models though I'm a little jealous :grin:

I removed it, but this time... its filthy, I cleaned the hydro-sheild, but the filter is a little nasty itself.
What do you guys use to clean your filter?
And how often should I be cleaning the filter?

Well after receiving my new Injen today....it took me a little under 2 hours to install it. I jacked up the drivers front & popped off the drivers wheel & removed the several clips holding the wheel well plastic in place. I also removed the fog lamp housing & the fog lamp itself & getting to what I needed was really simple.

I took Willy's advise....take care of the trans cooler bracket 1st. IF ....IF you can remove the trans cooler on GTS models ONLY....3 screws hold that on.....lay the trans cooler down while you remove the (2) mounting brackets that where already on the car & replace it with the one that came with the new intake. Line things up & pop that trans cooler back on.....your in business!

NO popping off the front bumper as they suggest....it was really pretty simple & straight forward. Kinda tight to move around...but if my fat @$$ can do it...you can too.

NEWBIES....don't be afraid of doing this project by yourself. I'm not the most mechanically inclined person, but this was really pretty easy. The instuctions that come with the intake are really great...would be even easier if the pictures were in color....but I got through it & you will too.

Besides....when you got a friend like freakingwilly on your side.....pretty much any mod is possible with his wisdom & know-how. Thanks William.....I owe you one for all the times I ask silly questions & your ALWAYS there to help. Well....I prob..owe you alot more than 1 :liebe011:
As soon as I get up in the morning....(jeez just looked at the clock...it IS morning!)
I'm taking it out for a spin....heres hoping that all is good & yes...I did install the Hydro Shield as well...better safe than sorry :57:
