Unfortunately, in Canada, we don't get the navigation option and are required to buy a portable GPS device if we want one in the car.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 250 just last week and it works great!

However, I changed the area where I install my GPS like 3 times in less than 4 days because I was never satisfied.

If I installed in on the right side (near the rearview mirror) or the left side (near the window), it would distract me as I drive and block some of my vision and I would have a cable dangling away. Furthermore, by installing it on the windshield, would-be thieves can see I have a GPS in the car.

Finally, I installed it near the shifter, next to the cigarette lighter (in that little hole area). It works great there, and it is much harder for thieves to sneak a peek of my GPS, and no dangling cable.

Where have you installed your GPS'?

haven't got a GPS device yet, but it would be nice to see a pic of your installation to get an idea of what it looks like...your positioning sounds like a good idea.

Upload it to a site like Photobucket. Then right click the photo and scroll down to properties. Then copy the address and when you go to post above the typing box there is a button labeled "IMG", you have to click that and it will bring up a script box. Paste your address into that, and voila! You have your pic in your post!

I bought a Garmin 250W (widescreen model) last christmas. I didnt like the standard support that came with it. So I bought a custom air-vent mount for it. It tilts, pivots, rotates, you name it.

So now I've got mine mounted to the airvent directly to the right of my audio controls.

does that mean it was pretty far down the window otherwise it would be right in your face. wouldn't that be hard to reach to punch in addresses?

got mine in the same place as yours chewey.

i just find that there are way too many wires - got my itrip hooked up to the head phone jack in the garmin, and the power cable from the itrip (its one of those which u plug into the cigarette lighter and then into the jack and can then hook up a usb cable) into the garmin as well. works like a charm though.

Just wondering that by having it there.....does your signal strength suffer?

Garmin has a few diff. items to hold your GPS. The one that I like is the little sand bag. It has an anti slip bottom that pretty much stays put where you plop it down on the dash.

I have also found on E-Bay a mount that goes into your cup holder, air vent, dash mount, floor mount.

Yea its not in the way, and its not directly in front of me, its in the left lower area of the windshield where it fits fine, the only problem is, the navi i got sucks big ones, makes me take right turns into walls, and it has the capability to be updating, i updated it and it says i have to update it again, so im stuck with 2006 or something. Im going to spend some money of a good one, and not use my xmas present anymore lol.

Signal strenght doesn't suffer. I get all the bars.

I don't like the anti-slip bean bag thing because quite frankly, it's ugly lol. And it still doesnt solve my dangling wire problem.

I drove 200 kilometres today (120 miles) with my GPS in its new position and it's great.

If I have like a Panasonic 5" screen GPS, it would fill that entire hole up and almost look factory ^_^

I too own a Garmin. I found a perfect place for myself with the suction stand. It's to the right side of the emergency/seat belt light. The small space on the faux carbon fiber strip --although very tight -- will accommodate the suction. Took me a few tries, and a bit tricky but works. I don't have to look down to view the GPS, just to the side. Would like to put up a pic when I get the chance.

BTW - I didn't have to use the mounting pad because the CF strip is smooth enough for the suction. :)

I have the s&s pack, but also own garmin that I used in my previous car. I still think that the regular spot (in the middle of the windshield on the bottom) is the best due to its visibility, accessibility and it's not loosing the signal there.
When it's mounted by the ashtray, outside the city it might be fine with the signal, but even with garmin mounted on the windshield i used to loose the signal in manhattan.
thats my opinion.
it's always a matter of personal prefference

I installed my alpine blackbird (previous gen.) under my passenger seat which plugs into my Alpine video head unit. I ran the antenna on my dash towards the windshield. Works/looks well.

The new Alpine iva-w505 or even the iva-w205 is great, 'cause the new Alpine navi unit plugs in to the actual head unit (kinda like putting in a cd). So then you have a killer nav unit, that you can use in another car if you need to.
