I am thinking about hooking up a class III hitch to the 2001 Montero I have. Will the vehicle safely pull a two axle trailer with 5000 lb vehicle on it. I would like to
pull my 4 x 4 to certain trails in comfort, play, and then come back home it comfort again.

Love the Montero.. test drove it and never looked back.

I thought the Montero was rated at 5000 lb towing capacity. So the trailer and car could possibly put you over.

Has anyone used this vehicle to tow with??? I wonder if it is the lawyers setting the limit at 5000 lbs or the manufacturers.

I know a Boy Scout leader that tows his trailers around, and he hasn't had any problems yet.

If I have a total wt of 4000 lbs including the trailer, most people would agree the vehicle could handle the load?

One individual said it could handle the load but was concerned with the Tranny. Any thoughts on this?

have a 2000 Mit/Mont 4X4 with tow package and I tow a dual trailer with one 2 seater and one 3 seater Seedoo on it. I travel for about 2 hours each way to the lake and have only had one incident. That was when I was doing 90 and the tranny overheated, but that was my own fault. Otherwise she has had no problems taking hills or whatever! I love her. I'm not sure if you have the tow package or not. Hope this helps sorry I don't have the actual tow capacity figures handy. 8)

Hi All,

I too am interested in towing capacity for my '01 Montero Ltd. The manual states that the capacity is 1500lbs or up to 5000lbs if the trailer has brakes. As I understand it, this is the combined weight of the trailer and whatever is on it.

I am also interested to know if anyone knows how or if you need to recalibrate towing capacity for altitude. I have heard anywhere from 2-4% reduction for every 1000 ft in elevation is realistic.

I also am interested in knowing if anyone has found that the sporttronic shift works as well as I would think it would for towing. I would think that not having the transmission "searching" for gearing would allow you to run in the best spot in the power band and would allow the transmission to operate cooler as well.

I have heard some say that you could pull the 500lbs, and as long as you were realistic about your max speed, you would be fine.

I cannot get any information from the dealers, just curious about anyone's personal experience.

I too would think that the lawyers would require ratings that were WELL within the real capacities of the vehicle, but not sure and do not want to blow my tranny finding out.

Thanks for any responses

Brad
