I have a newer version than you and in mine I have individual coil packs. In your version I'm pretty sure you have more than one and if one goes down it will bring down the rest.

It really will turn into a guessing game for us to help. Have you downloaded ECU fault codes to see what pops up?

The ignition control module can be bad. The ignition control module pics up on the reluctor ring in the distributor , the ignition control module intercepts the reluctor pulses as the pick up in teh distributor spins and send signal to the ignition coil to pulse (spark) accordingly. The control module is located on the upper intake plenum, ive atgtached a picture of it. Its not too often that the pickup module in the distributor goes bad . Yu can source a salvage one and try it to see if it fixed yur problem. Older Many mitsubishi vehicle between 1990-1996 with single cam engine and distributor use the same module. 4 and 6 cyl single cam engines.

He like later models have multiple coils because he has distributorless ignition system , he has 3 coils , each coil serving 2 cylinders. Yu have a distributor with onlee one coil. I suspect yur ignition control module (power unit) the way yu can check is that , unplug the ignition coil, if yu have a continuity tester , perform this test , with the ignition switch on and teh tester one end on ground terminal , touch the terminals on the ignition coil plug in , one terminal should should have continuity with teh switch on and light the tester. If one of the terminals light the tester , thats a good sign that voltage is coming to the coil , if not yu may need to check the the fuse for the IGN . If the tester lights up , plug the tester to the positive terminal of the battery , and hold the tester on teh other terminal (not the one that lite up the tester previously) have sumone spin over the engine , the tester should flicker (the light should pulse)or light up as sumone is turning over the engine , if it does not light up then there is an issue with the Ignition Control Module ,. Ignition control modules usually have symptoms like this , work one minute then not the next. If it was the pick up inside the distributor it would seeminglly want to start or start on off irratically. My best bet would be the ignition control module (power unit)

Like ive stated the module is small but it affects quite a bit. If its bad it will not permit the ignition coil to spark. I have written ways to test the system in the above posts, On older distributor models the ignition control module controled the ignition coil after receiving signal frum teh distributor pick-up signal frum the distributor reluctor wheel. If yu kno of a salvage yard near by yu can easily look for a 1990-1995 Mitsubishi vehicle with a distributor , wether 4cy or V6 , all ones with a distributor uses the same ignition control module. Its also easy to test on vehicle , by checking the imput signal to teh coil as explained.

The onlee other thing that interacts with the ignition control module is the ECM . But thats a far out thing to think about , in the one time case i had this , the ECM had gotten wet over various occassions , but then it would not start sporatically , some times it started and sometimes it did not. But mostlly the ignition control module are usually always the culperate , second is the pick up in the distributor.

(ignition control modules nead to be grounded (screwed down) even if just trying one)

Good advice KiT, hopefully you have him on the right path. You are very knowledgeble about all the models where most of us only work with the one we own. Thanks for all the info you offer.

Thanks very much , well ive worked on cars since i was 12 with my brothers and uncles and we love Mitsubishi here and ive seen many a model as well as other makes but ive been around Mitsubishis all my life so i try to help with the models i kno , but that ignition thing should be their alley. If they are unsure i posted a way to check the system , but on the older models if yu perform the check i explained , yu can easily find the problem.
