Hi All

I have joined in forum, chiefly finding the discussions quite knowledgible, i have recently bought 2001 GDi 1.8 space star. Its done 55K and to me it looks as ok drive but previous owner told me to get a few things right:
1) Cambelt change
2) Full service (oils filters etc)

Now my friend here has advised following as well:
3) 2 Tyre changes
4) self doing the engine oil change air filter change etc

A few of the known problems are:
5) RHS front window mirror slides back 3/4th when it hits top and has to be nudged up in little 'steps' to complete the closure
6) LHS front window just gets stuck if put down fully
7) Its a little bit squeaky but yes a little bit only
8) Clutch seems ok for now but ofcourse not like the new ones
9) DIgital clock display is broken

My humble request to you all to let me know on above points about your expert opinion. Do keep in mind that my financial constraints don't allow me to spend max 250 odd. ANy other suggestions are most welcome, specially avoiding getting ripped off at the garages'

The filters can be done by yourself, if you feel confidient.

But I would suggest the cambelt change at around the 54,000 mile mark. The belt will survive for longer but if it goes, it will be very expensive to fix. A new engine is not cheap (I would know, I didn't check on my belt and seized my engine at 99,000 miles. secondhand engine cost £1,600 plus fitting).

Tyres can be found at various places, but search for quotes online to get the best price. I use GT Champiro 55 which seem to work well without being expensive (note kwik-fit list the wrong size for my model. Their site says 195/50R15 but mine are 195/55R15).

Also, hunt around for a good mech as Mitzi's own can be expensive.

Thanks for the advise, i had found a good local x-mitsu mechanic. I have got the mechanical stuff done with £140 (cambelt assembly - went for assembly rather than just the cam belt, water pump - advised to do them together, oil service). All parts were purchased by me for approx £250.

Many Thanks for your help and i am hopeful this discussion thread is useful to all.
